Reading, Language,
and Literature Content Specifications

Domain 1: Language and Linguistics
This domain covers content in such areas as language structure and linguistics, language development and acquisition, literacy, and assessment. One of the following courses are recommended to cover this domain:

  • ENG/LING 206: Language Acquisition
  • ENGL 303: Structure of Modern English
  • READ 340: Fostering Language Growth for Reading Readiness
  • HCOM 407: Speech Language Development and Disorders for Teachers

Domain 2: Non-Written and Written Communication
This domain covers content in the conventions of language, writing strategies, writing applications, non-written communication and research strategies. The following courses are recommended to cover this domain:

  • ENGL 101: College Writing (GE I.B, Written Communication)
  • Any GE survey of literature class (GE III.B.2 or 3)
  • HCOM 102: Public Speaking
    or
    THTR 110: Oral Communication of Literature (GE I.A, Oral Communication)
  • READ 290: Critical Reading as Critical Thinking (GE I.C, Critical Thinking)
  • Most majors require specific courses that also contribute to knowledge in this area (e.g. LBST 301 or CAS 300).

Domain 3: Texts
This domain covers content in literary texts with special attention to children's literature. Students should understand the different literary genres and be able to interpret themes and both literal and figurative meanings in texts from a range of cultures. The following courses are recommended to cover this domain:

  • ENGL 341: Children's Literature
    or
    THTR 311: Oral Interpretation of Children's Literature (GE III.B.3; upper division GE)
  • Most survey of literature classes, e.g. ENGL 200: Introduction to Literature,
    ENGL 211: British Literature to 1760,
    ENGL 212: British Literature Since 1760,
    ENGL 221: American Literature to Whitman,
    ENGL 222: American Literature Since Twain,
    ENGL 110: Literature of the Western World, Ancient to Medieval,
    or ENGL 111: Literature of the Western World, Renaissance to 19thc. (GE III.B.2); also,
    upper division survey of literature, e.g. CPLT 324: World Literature to 1650
    or CPLT 325: World Literature From 1650 (GE III.B.3)
