Visual and Performing Arts Content Specifications

Domain 1: Dance
This domain covers the components and strands of dance education found in the Visual and Performing Arts Framework. The domain covers such areas as styles of dance from a variety of times, places and cultures, knowledge of criteria to use when making judgments about dance works based on the elements of dance, an understanding of the elements of dance (e.g. space, time, levels, and force/energy). One of the following classes is recommended to cover this domain:

  • DANC 101: Introduction to Dance (GE III.B.1)
  • DANC 471: Creative Dance for Children

Domain 2: Music
This domain covers the components and strands of music education found in the Visual and Performing arts Framework. The domain covers such areas as styles and types of music and instruments from a variety of times, places and cultures, knowledge of criteria to use when making judgments about musical works based on the elements and concepts of music (e.g. pitch, rhythm, timbre, and notation). One of the following classes is recommended to cover this domain:

  • MUSC 100: Introduction to Music
    or MUSC 101: Music Theory for Non-Music Majors (GE III.B.1)
  • MUSC 433: Music in Early Childhood

Also:

  • Major Specific classes that contribute to knowledge in this domain:
    • LBST/HIST 302A: Historical Dimension of Liberal Studies
    • LBST/HIST 302B: Historical Dimension of Liberal Studies
    • LBST 303: Liberal Studies in the Humanities and Arts

Domain 3: Theatre
This domain covers the components and strands of theater education found in the Visual and Performing Arts Framework. The domain covers such areas as styles of theatre from a variety of times, places and cultures, knowledge of criteria to use when making judgments about dramatic works based on the elements of theatre (e.g. acting, directing, design and scriptwriting). One of the following classes is recommended to cover this domain:

  • THTR 100: Introduction to Theatre (GE III.B.1)
  • THTR 402A: Dramatic Acting for Children

Domain 4: Visual Art
This domain covers the components and strands of visual arts education found in the Visual and Performing Arts Framework. The domain covers such areas as styles of visual arts from a variety of times, places, and cultures, knowledge of criteria to use when interpreting and making judgments about visual art works based on the principles of art (e.g. balance, repetition, contrast, emphasis and unity) and how they are used to organize line, color, value, space, texture, shape, and form. One of the following classes is recommended to cover this domain:

  • ART 101: Introduction to Art (GE III.B.1)
  • ART 380: Art and Child Development (GE III.B.3)
