SABBATICAL & DIFFERENCE IN PAY

 Sabbatical Leaves

Note: Questions about employment benefits for faculty may be directed to the Office of Employment Services.

UPS 260.102  as well as  Article 27  of the Unit 3 Collective Bargaining Agreement govern the granting of Sabbatical leave to eligible faculty. It is recommended that you review both thoroughly prior to submitting your application. In order to qualify for a sabbatical leave, faculty must submit the Sabbatical Leave Application by October 15th at 5:00 P.M. Faculty must also submit a Professional Leave Report at the conclusion of their Sabbatical.

Eligibility Requirement for Sabbatical and Difference-in-Pay

 

Probationary and Tenured Faculty, Full-Time Lecturers, Full-Time Librarians and Full-Time Academic-Related Counselors (SSP-AR) may be eligible for Sabbatical/DIP leave. Faculty must have full-time continuous service for 6 years total prior to taking their first sabbatical or DIP leave. Thereafter, faculty must have full-time continuous service for 3 years prior to taking a DIP leave or 6 years prior to taking a sabbatical leave.

2011-12 Active full-time 2nd year
2012-13 Active full-time 3rd year
2013-14 Active full-time 4th year
2014-15 Active full-time 5th year
2015-16 Active full-time 6th year – can apply during this year
for leave in following year
2016-17 Active full-time or on leave Eligible for leave

Partial years of active service count toward leave eligibility. Therefore, faculty taking a Fall leave would not begin to accrue credit for service until their return in Spring of the same academic year.

 

Once eligibility is achieved, faculty maintain status until a Sabbatical or Difference in Pay leave is taken. Subsequent leave eligibility is calculated based on the date faculty return from such a leave. Note: A leave must be awarded and taken in order for the eligibility count to be reset.

 

Eligibility Scenarios

 

What if I previously took a Sabbatical or Difference in Pay leave?

 

Faculty must serve full-time on the campus for six years after the leave to become eligible for another sabbatical leave or three years to become eligible for a Difference In Pay Leave:

 

2009-10 Sabbatical or DIP Leave No Credit
2010-11 Active full-time 1st year
2011-12 Active full-time 2nd year
2012-13 Active full-time 3rd year – could apply during
this year for DIP in following year
2013-14 Active full-time 4th year
2014-15 Active full-time 5th year
2015-16 Active full-time 6th year – can apply during
this year for DIP or Sabbatical
2016-17 Active full-time or on leave Eligible for leave

What if I worked less than a full year during the 6 year eligibility period?

 

Partial credit is given for partial years worked:

 

Fall 2010 Sabbatical or DIP Leave No Credit
Spring 2011 Active full-time .5 year of service
2011-12 Active full-time 1.5 years
2012-13 Active full-time 2.5 years – could apply during this year for a DIP leave in following year
Fall 2013 Active full-time 3 years – could apply during this year for a DIP leave in following semester or year
Spring 2014 Active full-time 3.5 years – Eligible for DIP
2014-15 Active full-time 4.5 years – Eligible for DIP
2015-16 Active full-time 5.5 years – could apply during this year for Sabbatical in Spring 2015
Fall 2016 Active full-time 6 years
Spring 2017 Active full-time OR on leave Eligible for DIP and Sabbatical

What if I took a Personal Leave of Absence without pay?

A one year personal leave without pay does not count as a year of service credit toward eligibility.  For more information see Article 22 or contact the FAR office.

What if I took a Professional Leave of Absence without Pay?

 

One year of a professional leave of absence without pay during this period counts as a year of service toward eligibility. Any years of a professional leave without pay beyond the first do not count toward eligibility:

2013-14 Professional Leave of Absence 4th year

What if I was hired with Service Credit?

 

Service Credit granted upon hire counts toward eligibility:

2014-15 Active full-time 5th year
2015-16 Active full-time 6th year – can apply during this year
