Information and Learning Commons
Campus-Wide Computer Labs Operated by Information Technology
Information & Learning Commons (ILC). The goal of the ILC is to provide a physical, flexible space that allows students to access resources (computers, subscription databases, the Web, production software, and statistical packages), conduct research, write papers, create presentations, and produce projects in one seamless environment, thus reflecting our University’s mission and goals for student learning. ILC has the potential of facilitating active, out of class-inquiry-based learning that is contextual, engaging, and social. It appeals to our existing students, as well as new, incoming users —the multitasking Net Generation—who have a preference for collaborative and active learning. Above all, it provides a centralized access point for multiple services (http://www.fullerton.edu/ilc)—expert research, writing, and tech assistance is a quantum leap in support for students. Titan Lab, which resides in the University Library, also became part of the ILC.
With the success of ILC within the University Library in 2008, Information Technology expanded this model and opened McCarthy Commons in McCarthy Hall. McCarthy Commons provides a comfortable open lab facility that promotes new models of learning and collaborative activities. Special attention has been made to details such as: the type of hardware and software available; the floor plan; choice of furniture, etc in order to combine flexible space integrated with technologies that enhance and encourage communication and collaboration.
In Spring 2011 ILC launched the Student Genius Corner located in Titan Lab. The SGC is an additional student service that provides a number of services to students, including an online reservation system for students to make appointments, and also supports the Testing Center. Some of the services provided: Long-term Laptop Checkout for Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) classes; Technical assistance, such as wireless network/printer connection, installing campus related software, etc. for personal laptops and smart phones; Media distribution; etc. The Testing Center was also launched in conjunction with the Geology department and provided testing services for the online Geol 310T class. Testing Center services are available for online courses only.
Information & Learning Commons endeavors to offer additional services that continue to reflect our University’s mission and goals for student learning including: continued development of campus partnerships with IT and University Library to improve ILC services, continue gathering statistical data to assess and advance ILC services, incorporate IT expertise into University Library’s technical services, enhance the ILC webpage, continue to provide the latest software versions, improve hardware and add more equipment, research new technology and other academic environments, create and deploy more self-service options for students.
