The Movement Enhancement Lab is a program of the Center for Successful Aging through the Kinesiology Department in the College of Health and Human Development.. Previously called the falls prevention clinic this program uses a multidimensional approach to assess and treat balance related problems. Under the direction of Drs. Debra Rose and Jessie Jones, the movement enhancement program focuses upon balance and gait assessments to determine the most effecting strategies for improvement. Training classes are offered in the community as well as at the Ruby Gerontology Center. Programs of training are individually assessed and classes are often in small groups settings. The lab in the Ruby Gerontology Center houses specific assessment and exercise equipment although several of the remedies and preliminary assessments are non equipment related and can be done in various settings.
Falls are a serious, yet common problem that can affect adults as they age. Of major concern is the potential for injury, particularly hip fractures. Once an individual has begun to have falls the likelihood of further falls increases. This program is designed to intervene with positive strategies to help determine the cause of the problem and potential remedies to reduce risk.
