  Registration and Financial Aid Checklist

This checklist will help you minimize the possibility of problems with registration and/or financial aid due to study abroad. ALL students, regardless of whether or not they plan to use financial aid, are strongly encouraged to complete the items in the first section. Completion of these items in a timely manner will help reduce the risk of delay or cancellation of your registration and/or financial aid.

All Students

Leave of Absence form
You will need to complete a Leave of Absence form if you plan to study abroad for more than one semester. You can pick-up the Leave of Absence form in LH 114. It MUST be completed prior to departing on your program. View the CSUF Leave of Absence policy here.

Registration
ALL required forms must be filed with the Study Abroad Office in order to maintain your CSUF student status and allow for your student aid to be released (if applicable). Failure to complete these forms may cause you to lose your student status, prevent the release of financial aid and/or result in you receiving no credit for your study abroad program. Check with the SAO to be sure you study abroad file is complete BEFORE departing on your study abroad program.

Holds
You must clear any “holds” on your CSUF student record prior to your departure by working directly with the CSUF office issuing the hold. Holds prevent your credit from being processed, your financial aid (if applicable) from being released. The Study Abroad Office is not able to clear or override holds for you.

Address, Phone Number, and E-mail Address
Update your contact information with the Study Abroad Office and the Admission & Records Office prior to departure.

Provide Parent/Guest Access
Remember you may not be in a location where you can easily access the internet. For this reason, we recommend that you provide someone you trust with the ability to view your on-line student academic, billing, and financial aid information. Be aware that providing this access does not allow this person access to discuss your record with Cal State Fullerton and study abroad staff, and that a Power of Attorney is recommended for this purpose.

Additional Information for Students Planning to Use Financial Aid
(Loans, Grants and some Scholarships)

FAFSA
Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible, prior to your Financial Aid Advisor appointment (see below). Submission after the deadline may result in limited and/or late disbursements of awards. Complete the FAFSA as if you were planning to study on campus at Cal State Fullerton.

Financial Aid Advisor Appointment
Set up an appointment with a Study Abroad Financial Aid counselor in UH-177 at least two months prior to departure.

Web FAAN
When you are notified via email that your Financial Aid Award Notification (Web FAAN) is available on the web, follow the on-line instructions to accept or decline the different forms of aid you have been offered.

Promissory Notes
Complete and submit to the Office of Financial Aid promissory notes for any loans. Some promissory notes may be submitted electronically. Be aware that your Power of Attorney cannot sign for all types of loans.

Loan Deferment
If you need to defer past student loans, it is your responsibility to complete deferment forms and notify the direct loan service that you have returned to school. It is a good idea to provide your contact person with a copy of your completed deferment forms. If you need assistance with loan deferment, consult with the Office of Financial Aid.

Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy
Read and understand the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.

Taxes and Next Year’s FAFSA
If you will be abroad during spring semester, remember to file your taxes and complete your FAFSA for the following year. Your Power of Attorney may be able to assist you with this paperwork.
