Tuesday, November 17, 2009 12:00-1:00 UH-205 Cattle or Cash: The Symbolic Structure of Lobola? Dr. Astrid Friedrich, University of Cape Town, will explore the traditional Southern African custom of Lobola. This is the custom of the groom’s family compensating the bride’s family for her hand in marriage. Significant criticism of this custom will be explored and discussed. It is argued that practicing Lobola leads to treating women as commodities, the spread of AIDS, and the trapping of women in abusive relationships. Dr. Astrid Friedrich, University of Cape Town
