Women's Cultural Resource Centers

Mission

To provide an educational environment in which first generation college women of color can succeed

The Women's Cultural Resource Centers share a common goal to provide female students with an environment sensitive to cultural and political issues faced by women of color in society. Through these resource centers, education, dialogue and connection for women of different cultures is enhanced on our campus.

The Women's Cultural Resource Centers provide rich and challenging leadership opportunities for women exploring their ethnic and cultural identities, as well as women’s issues at work and the educational environment. Finally, the Women's Cultural Resource Centers provide the university an educationally based information center and role-modeling service for women of different cultures.

Goals

  • Increase retention rates for first generation college women of different cultures.
  • Increase graduation rates for first generation college women of different cultures.
  • Expand the knowledge and awareness of the impact of culture, gender and ethnic influences on students’ professional lives
  • Challenge stereotypes and engage in activities that decrease discrimination and racism
  • Explore the intersection of gender and ethnicity.

Objectives

  • Create activities that explore ethnicity, culture and gender
  • Create activities that enhance students’ leadership skills and abilities
  • Create activities that create dialogue on the role of gender and culture

Welcome to

  • Attend, participate and organize discussion groups, special programs, and forums.
  • Research in the Center's library, which holds specialized literature, community information, articles, and magazines.
  • Get peer counseling directed toward self-growth, awareness and professional empowerment.

Each group usually meets in the conference room of the WoMen's Center (UH-205). Activities and times are posted in each group's schedule.
