The university requires that all students completing bachelor's degrees demonstrate writing ability acceptable for graduation. The upper division writing requirement has two parts and each must be fulfilled in order to earn the degree
Upper Division Writing Course
Each major at CSU Fullerton has designated one or more courses to satisfy the upper division writing requirement for the baccalaureate degree. Talk to your major advisor about the class you should take.
Junior Level Examination in Writing Proficiency (EWP)
Students take the EWP after completing 60 units toward the baccalaureate degree. If a student fails the EWP, the student may retake the exam until a passing score is achieved. A limited number of students who fail the EWP two or more times may enroll in ENGL 199, Intensive Writing Review. Credit in ENGL 199 will be equivalent to passing the examination. This course does not earn units toward the degree, nor will it satisfy the upper division writing course requirement described above. Information about EWP test dates and registration may be found in the class schedule or by visiting the Testing Center website.
Grad Check
Once a student reaches a minimum of 85 units, the student is eligible to submit a graduation check. Ideally, the grad check should be submitted approximately one year in advance of graduation. This is the final review of the student's records to officially confirm what the student must do to fulfill remaining requirements for the bachelor's degree. The grad check is first completed by Admissions & Records where general education requirements are reviewed. Next, an advisor in the student's major reviews the grad check for remaining requirements for the major.
Students apply for Grad Check on their Student Portal under "Student Center." Grad Checks will be completed using the student's Titan Degree Audit, so it is important for students to continually check their TDA for accuracy.
