big bullet Dr. Steve Murray, Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dr. Steve Murray was appointed the Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs on July 1, 2010. Prior to that, he served as the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at California State University, Fullerton from July 2005. He received his BA and MA degrees from UC Santa Barbara and his Ph.D. from UC Irvine. He has published numerous papers and reports on topics such as marine herbivory, marine biogeography, human impacts on coastal populations and communities, and the ecology and biology of seaweeds and is lead author on a book entitled “Monitoring Rocky Shores” . Dr. Murray has received more than $5 Million in external funding during the last ten years to support his research, professional activities, and College programs. His recent research has mostly been supported by NOAA Sea Grant and the Minerals Management Service (U. S. Department of Interior) and includes studies of invasive seaweeds , the nature and process implications of long-term changes in intertidal populations, and the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in urban settings . He also is Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation grant to increase the number of degree recipients in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Dr. Murray was named CSU Fullerton's Outstanding Professor in 2003 and has twice been named the Distinguished Faculty Member in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He was awarded the 2007 Wheeler J. North Award for Scientific Excellence by the Southern California Academy of Sciences and is the past-President of the Phycological Society of America and the Western Society of Naturalists. Dr. Murray recently completed an appointment to the Federal Advisory Committee on Marine Protected Areas for the U.S. Departments of Interior and Commerce. He also was a member of the marine reserves science panel for the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Studies Federal Advisory Committee for Minerals Management Service. Dr. Murray recently served as co-chair of the South Coast Region Science Advisory Team appointed by the Director of the State Department of Fish and Game to guide the implementation of California's Marine Life Protection Act and now serves on the Science Advisory Team for California's North Coast Region. He is currently a member of the Areas of Special Biological Significance Natural Water Quality Committee of the State Water Resources Control Board and the Science Advisory Team for California's Ocean Protection Council.
