Learning Goals and Student Learning Outcomes

The following goals and learning outcomes have been established for students pursuing the MA degree in Communicative Disorders

Knowledge and Skills Areas of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)

  • Demonstrate theoretical knowledge in the areas of: articulation and phonology; cognitive aspects of communication; modalities of communication; fluency; receptive and expressive language disorders; social communication issues; voice and resonance; swallowing; and hearing.
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise in the evaluation and treatment of the following disorders: articulation and phonology; cognitive aspects of communication; modalities of communication; fluency; receptive and expressive language disorders; social communication issues; voice and resonance; swallowing; and hearing.

Cultural and Linguistic Diversity

  • Demonstrate knowledge of different versus disordered speech/language characteristics in culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

ASHA Code of Ethics

  • Demonstrate ability to apply the ASHA Code of Ethics to the evaluation and treatment of clinical disorders.

Student Research

  • Demonstrate active involvement and collaboration in faculty scholarly and creative activity.

Life-long Learning

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the training requirements for obtaining and maintaining the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology, professional licensure, and public school credentialing.
  • Participate in continuing education programs that provide additional training.
