CSUF DELEGATION to Fudan University, Shanghai;
and to Central University for Nationalities, Beijing

June, 2004

The Office of Academic Programs is pleased to announce the eleventh annual seminar involving Chinese universities. For nine of the ten previous years, we focused with great success on the Fullerton I Fudan Seminar, a short-term study program in China hosted by our sister institution, Fudan University, in Shanghai, People's Republic of China. Last year we added a component in Beijing, hosted by our partner institution, the Central University for Nationalities.

This year's program will once again span about ten days, departing from Los Angeles in the first week of June, spending about a week in Shanghai, and concluding with a shorter stay in Beijing.

This represents a very special opportunity for faculty, together with staff who are involved with foreign students.

In both Shanghai and Beijing. seminar participants will

  • meet with university faculty and staff;
  • tour the host university campus;
  • participate in talks with university faculty on contemporary China, including issues of population management, foreign policy, economic reform, higher education, and other topics; and
  • if possible, participate in presentations by Fullerton faculty on topics of interest to counterpart faculty, staff, and students.

In Shanghai, seminar participants will also visit culturally significant sites in the cities of Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou. While in Beijing, seminar participants will also visit culturally significant sites in and near Beijing, including the Great Wall, Tienanmen Square, and more.

Participation in the Fullerton/Fudan/Central University for Nationalities Seminar is limited to ten faculty and staff. On a space available basis, a spouse or guest may accompany a faculty or staff member. An ad hoc committee of the International Education Committee of the Academic Senate will serve as the selection committee. The main criteria for selection are:

1. Commitment to integrating Chinese and Asian perspectives and issues into the University curriculum.

2. Commitment to improving staff service to international students based on knowledge gained during the seminar.

3. Evidence of commitment to internationalizing CSU Fullerton through previous work such as participation in colloquia on international subjects, membership in Phi Beta Delta, service on the International Education Committee, hosting, mentoring, or advising international students, or any other indication of international interest and commitment.

The cost of participation is approximately $2,000 per person, which includes estimated airfare (Los Angeles - Shanghai - Beijing - Los Angeles), reimbursement for hard currency expenditures by host universities, and miscellaneous expenses. Room, board, and local transportation while in Shanghai are covered under the terms of the CSUF-Fudan and CSUF- Central University for Nationalities exchange agreements.

Participants in previous Fullerton/Fudan Seminars have taken advantage of the opportunity to extend their stay in China to visit other parts of the country at the conclusion of the seminar.

Applicants for the 2005 Fullerton I Fudan I Central University for Nationalities delegation will be invited in early February.
