Budget Update
California is in the midst of a budget crisis. In an effort to address the state’s budget shortfall, Governor Schwarzenegger has proposed 10% statewide across-the-board reductions.
The state budget proposed by Governor Schwarzenegger reduces funding to the California State University by a total of $386.1 million. This reduction includes a direct $312.9 million cut and fails to fund $73.2 million necessary to avoid raising student fees by 10 percent for the 2008-09 academic year.
The $386.1 million proposed reduction to the CSU is a staggering figure given that we are already severely under-funded. The CSU is suffering from deep cuts made just a few years ago; we endured cuts of more than $500 million between 2002 and 2005 ---if you adjust for inflation, the CSU budget today remains below the 2002 level.
The Governor’s proposed budget will impact Cal State Fullerton in three critical ways:
- Possible reduction in our 08-09 budget by $18.1 million
- Denying access for up to 1,000 qualified students
- Fewer course sections available for current students thus delaying progress toward graduation
