Tea with Dr. Norton
The English, Languages and Literatures Alumni Chapter enjoyed an afternoon tea as special guest, Dr. Brian Michael Norton presented an informal discussion about his newly published book, Fiction and the Philosophy of Happiness on May 11. During and after his presentation, he encouraged questions and a lively discussion pursued. Everyone was animated about their interest in the way Dr. Norton approached the subject of happiness. Guests enjoyed a casual lunch and were excited to welcome the Daily Titan as they covered the story.
Alumni Reunion
On Saturday, April 13th, the Department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics and the English Languages and Literatures Alumni Chapter hosted the second annual Alumni Reunion at the Golleher Alumni House to benefit the Writer-in-Residence program. Alumni enjoyed delicious appetizers, wine, and desserts while mingling with one another, catching up with faculty, and meeting current students. Some of the highlights from the event included the poetry readings by Lincoln McElwee and Skyler Schulze, who are both graduate students in our M.A. program and have worked with the 2013 Writer-in-Residence, David Hernandez. David followed with readings of his selected poetry. Laughter filled the room when his touches of humor shined through his readings.

Shakespearian Classic Unites English Alumni
The English Languages & Literatures Alumni Chapter had another successful and enjoyable alumni event celebrating a Shakespearian classic. The chapter feasted on a lovely picnic supper provided by the English Alumni Chapter at Bonita Canyon Sports Park in Newport Beach prior to the main event, Romeo and Juliet. It was a beautiful night under the stars as members enjoyed the timeless classic of two star-crossed lovers.
Even with the anticipated tragic ending, the evening ended on a happy note. This theatrical experience with friends, food and fun is likely to be repeated next year. Thank you so much to all the attendees for helping make this event a huge success.
