Requesting an Informational Interview
Requesting an informational interview can be done by phone, in-person, or in writing both in print and via email. Below is a sample format that you can follow if you are considering requesting an informational interview in writing.

Opening Paragraph — (Introduction and Purpose)
Identify how you got the person's name (referral, listing, internet, etc.). Explain to them why you are writing to them (information, advice, exploring career options, etc.).
Middle Paragraph — (Background/Interests and Specific Queries)
Communicate why their background and perspective is important to you. Share specific details about your interests, career aspirations, career goals and objectives, and how he/she can assist you in obtaining additional information in a specific career or industry.
Closing Paragraph — (Follow-up, Reiterate Purpose, and Thank Them)
Explain when and how you will contact them to set up a mutually beneficial appointment. Reiterate what you are trying to accomplish and how 20–30 minutes of their time will help you in your process. Remember to thank them in advance for their time.
