Admission Requirements for Transfer STEP
STEP is organized in three phases with different admission requirements
associated with each phase. Students progress through Phases I &
II at their own pace; in Phase III, students enter the credential
program and must commit to taking the required credential classes
according to a two or three semester timeline.
Phase I/Pre-STEP
To be officially enrolled in the program, students must submit a
Pre-STEP registration form to the Community College attended and/or
a Center for Careers in Teaching (CCT) Field Representative.
While in Phase I, students complete specific classes that simultaneously
satisfy lower division general education requirements that prepare
them in the broad subject areas relevant to elementary classrooms.
Students who must take remedial coursework are encouraged to complete
these courses in the summer prior to the first day of classes in
the fall of the freshman year; however, this is not required.
Admission Requirements for Phase II/STEP:
In Phase II/STEP students complete the upper division general education
requirements, the prerequisites to the credential program and major
coursework. To advance to Phase II, a student must have completed
the following during Phase I:
- Declare a major from one of the approved STEP major options
- Attend a STEP workshop held by a CCT Field Representative
- Complete the specified Phase I/Pre-STEP coursework for general
education and major with at least a C (2.0) or better in each
class
- Complete the early fieldwork requirement
- Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Earn a passing score on the California Basic Educational Skills
Test (CBEST)
- Submit an application for Phase II/STEP to the CCT
Admission Requirements for Phase III/STEP - Credential:
In Phase III, students complete coursework in the multiple subject
and/or special education credential program. Students in STEP must
meet the same requirements as all prospective credential program
students. Students in STEP may avail themselves of any program option
(e.g. BCLAD, internship, etc.); students are encouraged to explore
these options during Phase II. To be eligible for Phase III, the
student must have completed the following:
- Attend an overview for the major (if it is required) and see
academic major advisor designated for STEP (usually in the first
semester attending CSUF)
- Attend a credential program overview for the credential area
of choice (multiple subject or special education.)
- Pass the specified Phase II/STEP coursework for general education,
major and credential program prerequisites with at least a C or
better (exception: EDEL/SPED credential prerequisite courses must
be passed with a B or better).
- Submit a completed application to Phase III/STEP-Credential
to the Admission to Teacher Education office. (Be sure to include
phase I and phase II requirement checklist signed by CCT program
coordinator)
- See an academic major advisor designated for STEP prior to submission
of graduation check to the Office of Admissions and Records
- File the graduation check after completion of 90 units
- Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Earn a passing score on all three subtests of the California
Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET).
- Earn a passing score on the Examination on Writing Proficiency
(EWP)
- Fingerprints, Background Check, and TB Clearance: The state
requires that all credential program students undergo a fingerprint
and background check, as well as take a TB test. Students in STEP
are required to apply for these procedures a full semester before
advancing to Phase III. Visit Admission to Teacher Education in
Education Classroom, room 182 to apply for the fingerprint and
background check. When the TB, fingerprint and background check
results come in the mail, students must return them to Admission
to Teach Education as soon as possible.
