chalkboard artMultiple Subject Streamlined Teacher Education Program (STEP)

An integrated teacher education program allows students to simultaneously earn a bachelor's degree and the preliminary teaching credential within 135 units (compared to the usual 120 units for a bachelor's degree plus 35 or more units for the preliminary teaching credential). Currently, the Center for Careers in Teaching administers STEP, an integrated program for Child and Adolescent Development and Liberal Studies majors who intend to teach elementary school.

 

STEP is divided into three phases:

Phase I/Pre-STEP (45 units): To advance to Phase II, students must:

      • Complete the 45 units of specified coursework.

      • Earn a minimum GPA of 2.5
      • Fulfill the field experience requirement.

      • Pass the CBEST
        (Click here for information on the CBEST)
      • Submit the Phase II/STEP application form during the semester the student completes the Phase I requirements.

Phase II/STEP: To advance to Phase III, students must:

      • Complete the Phase II coursework.
      • Earn a minimum GPA of 2.75
      • Pass all three subsets of the CSET.

      • Submit a completed application for Phase III.
        (Submission deadlines have not yet been established for this phase of the program)

 

Phase III/STEP-Credential: Students finish major classes, begin work in the multiple subject credential program and complete the requirements for the bachelor's degree.

 

Admission Requirements for Phase I/Pre-STEP:

  • Admission to CSUF as a first time freshman or at a partner Community College
  • Attend New Student Orientation at CSUF
  • Submission of the Phase I/Pre-STEP registration form to CCT

**Students may substitute GEOL 101 for GEOL 102 or BIOL 101 for BIOL 102; students in STEP must take at least 2 of the "102 science classes".

More about Field Experience - Students may complete Pre-Step Field Experience requirement in any of the following ways:

  • Participate in Freshman Future Teachers and complete UNIV 100A/100B. Click here to learn more about FFT.
  • Take EDEL 110.
  • Earned credit for EDSC 110 while in high school.
  • Complete the independent field experience practice (no units earned).
  • Community College students see a counselor for further information.
