Science Content Specifications

Domain 1: Physical Science
This domain covers content in such areas as structure and properties of matter as well as principles of motion and energy. The following courses are recommended to cover this domain:

  • CHEM/PHYS 102: Physical Science for Elementary Teachers
    or CHEM 100: Survey of Chemistry & PHYS 101: Survey of Physics (GE III.A.2a)
  • GEOL 410: Physical Science Concepts

Also:

  • Major specific classes that contribute to knowledge in this domain:
    • LBST 304: Liberal Studies in the Sciences
    • LBST 433: Liberal Studies Senior Seminar on Environmental Studies

Domain 2: Life Science
This domain covers content in such areas as structure of living organisms and their function (physiology and cell biology), living and nonliving components in environments (ecology), and life cycle, reproduction, and evolution (genetics and evolution). The following courses are recommended to cover this domain:

  • BIOL 101: Elements of Biology
    or BIOL 102: Biology for Elementary Teachers (GE III.A.2c)
  • BIOL 453: Life Science Concepts

Also:

  • Major specific classes that contribute to knowledge in this domain:
    • ANTH 101: Introduction to Biological Anthrolpology (Anthropology major)
    • BIOL 305: Liberal Studies in the Social Sciences
      (GE III.A./Child & Adolescent Development major)

Domain 3: Earth and Space Science
This domain covers content in such areas as the solar system and the universe (astronomy), the structure and composition of the earth (geology), the earth's atmosphere (meteorology), and the earth's water (oceanography). The following courses are recommended to cover this domain:

  • GEOL 101: Physical Geology
    or GEOL 102: Earth & Astronomical Sciences for Elementary Teachers (GE III.A.2b)
  • GEOL 410: Physical Science Concepts
