Social Science Content Specifications

Domain 1: World History
This domain covers content in such areas as ancient civilizations and medieval and early modern times. The following course is recommended to cover this domain:

  • HIST 110A: World Civilization to 16th c. (GE II.A)

Also:

  • LBST/HIST 302A: Historical Dimensions of Liberal Studies
    (required for the LBST major)
  • LBST/HIST 302B: Historical Dimensions of Liberal Studies
    (required for the LBST major)

Domain 2: U.S. History
This domain covers content in such areas as the early exploration, colonial era and the War of Independence; the development of the Constitution and the early republic; Civil War and the reconstruction period; the rise of industrial America. One of the following courses is recommended to cover this domain:

  • AMST 201: Introduction to American Studies (GE II.B.1)
  • HIST 170A: US to 1877
    (GE II.B.1, but note: students at CSUF who take 170A must take 170B also to satisfy the GE requirement)
  • HIST 180: Survey of American History (GE II.B.1)
  • HIST 190: Survey of American History With an Emphasis on Ethnic Minorities
    (GE II.B.1)

Also:

  • POSC 100: American Government (GE II.B.2)

Domain 3: California History
This domain covers content in such areas as the pre-Columbian period through the Gold Rush; economic, political and cultural development since the 1850's. One of the following courses is recommended to cover this domain:

  • AMST 395: California Cultures (GE. III.C.2)
  • LBST 310
  • HIST 408: History of California

The CSET also examines the prospective elementary teacher for subject matter skills and abilities applicable to the content domains in History and Social Science.
The CSET tests for competence in geographical skills, historiographical skills, and social scientific skills. The following courses contribute to the acquisition of these skills:

  • GEOG 100: Global Geography (GE III.C.1)
    or GEOG 160: Human Geography (GE III.C.2)
  • AMST 201, HIST 110A, 180, 190 (GE II.B.1) (already listed above)
  • POSC 100 (GE II.B.2) (already listed above)
  • AMST 395 (GE III.C.2) or LBST 310 (already listed above)
