Elementary Teachers Teach?

Elementary teachers teach everything from Anthropology to Zoology! The California State Department of Education establishes the curriculum to be taught in elementary classrooms in each of the following subject areas:

          • Language Arts
          • Mathematics
          • Science
          • Social Science
          • Visual & Performing Arts

The standards, which identify what is to be taught at each grade level, are published as the Student Academic Content Standards.

Elementary teachers also teach physical education. While there are not presently an approved set of Student Academic Content Standards for physical education, the subject matter content teachers should possess can be found by reading the Physical Education Framework.

Although elementary teachers do not teach their students about child growth and development, each teacher must have a solid working knowledge of this subject area.
