CSET Exams

The state is currently offers the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) to prove subject matter competency in the following CSUF credential areas:

  • Art
  • Business
  • Languages other than English: French, German, Japanese, & Spanish
  • Mathematics
  • Foundational Level Mathematics
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Science: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science (Geology), Physics
  • Social Science
  • Preliminary Educational Technology

These tests replace the tests formerly used to prove subject matter competency (the SSAT and Praxis exams). To prove subject matter competence the student will have to pass all the required subtests in a subject area.

For credentialing purposes a passing CSET exam score must be used within five years of the passing test date.
