In August of this year, the 50th Anniversary committee looks forward to the publication of The Fullerton Way : Fifty Years at California State University Fullerton . Author Dr. Lawrence de Graaf, History, Emeritus and a team of professional staff and history students have produced a comprehensive account of the first half-century of CSUF. The Fullerton Way is presented in seven chapters, each a mix of historical essay, captioned photographs, and vignettes that underscore important events, programs, and groups on the campus.

Constructed both chronologically and thematically, The Fullerton Way uses each of the five CSUF presidential eras to trace the physical and academic development of CSUF and the changing nature of student life on campus. As the title conveys, CSU Fullerton's often-original perspectives and methods are emphasized. In addition to campus history, The Fullerton Way includes the university's relationship with and impact on the history of North Orange County. To reflect this, throughout the text, efforts and projects that have bridged "gown" to "town" are highlighted.

Beginning with the history of the region and the master plan design, the book then moves on to illuminate the collaborative efforts of the pioneer administration and faculty that set precedence for later decision-making practices. It chronicles major developments under each CSUF presidential administration, the goals each set, and the challenges each faced to achieve them.

The Fullerton Way is retrospective and celebratory, but Dr. de Graaf and his team have also paid appropriate attention to the social and political conditions of each era. The book takes into account issues concerning student unrest in the late 1960s-early 1970s or state financial struggles through the 1970s and 1980s.

The book is written for diverse uses and audiences. CSUF personnel will get a useful overview of their campus history, indexed for easy reference. For alumni and retirees it will bring back memories of challenges and accomplishments. For the general reader it will give a comprehensive idea of how the university has evolved and its many activities. All readers should find the illustrations fascinating.
