Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two African American women at Howard University in Washington D.C. In 1930, the organization was incorporated as a private, non-profit organization for the purpose of providing services and to promote human welfare. From the first undergraduate chapter, Alpha chapter, the sorority has grown into an organization of over 930 graduate and undergraduate chapters with more than 200,000 predominantly Black college educated women. The sorority currently has chapters ins US, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. Today, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek-lettered sorority in the world.
