Leadership Project: “Step Ahead”Step Ahead Picture

Every year the University Leadership Conference hosts a leadership project to educate, motivate and encourage, participants to take action by getting involved in a social issue affecting the local community.

This year, the University Leadership Conference is hosting a community drive to collect school supplies for elementary students in low-income, first generation households. This drive starts February 2, 2009 and ends March 7, 2009 – the day of the conference.

Step Ahead was founded by Alina Pineda, a student who volunteered at a local elementary school and discovered they lacked the basic school supplies children needed to succeed in school. She established Step Ahead in fall 2005 with the mission to provide local elementary schools with necessary school supplies, books and other resources that will enhance the children’s learning experience. The project targets schools where the students overwhelmingly come from low-income, first generation households so the cost of pencils, pens, folders, markers, and other items can be overwhelming. Working with local office supply stores, classes, clubs and organizations at CSUF, other college and high school campuses, and generous individuals, the project is able to get enough donations to provide a set of supplies for each classroom.

Conference participants are encouraged to get involved in this project by bringing one or more of the following school supply items on the conference day:

Pens

Pencils

Rulers

Markers

Crayons

Colored Pencils

Notebook Paper

Folders

Glue

Other School Supplies
