2008 Internship Description

Grants Intern

The Grants Intern will gain broad knowledge of the different facets of grants management, including grantee contracting and reporting. The intern will be provided with key responsibilities as well as routine daily activities, in order to understand the broad range of activities that a public funding agency undertakes. The intern will work in an office environment that is creative and stimulating, and will be invited to sit in on various Arts Commission meetings in order to learn more about grant management, arts administration and potential job opportunities.

Major projects and activities may include the following:

  • Creation of Kaleidoscope, the Arts Commission's visual, online project highlighting the work of our current grantees;
  • Creation of fundraising resource guide and tool kit;
  • Coordination of convening on arts and civic dialogue and launch of Homeless Arts Services Grant Initiative
  • Research and outreach to arts organizations that have not yet applied for an Arts Commission grant.

Required Skills/Desirable Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in grants management and arts administration;
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to multi-task and handle confidential information
  • Ability to conduct research
  • Motivated, self-starter who is detail oriented
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Explorer)

Civic Art Program

2008 Internship Description

Collections Intern

The Collections Intern will assist with the ongoing development of a database of the County's collection of civic art. This collection includes both historical and contemporary public art located on County facilities and grounds. The intern will learn how to conduct a survey of an artwork and will identify and research pieces that will be recorded in the collection database. This research will be utilized to develop entries for our website http://lacountyarts.org/civicart_countyscollection.htm . Desirable qualifications: 

  • Strong interest in visual art, public art or historic preservation;
  • Familiarity with database software, especially Access;
  • Experience in writing summary descriptions of artworks and or architecture;
  • Strong oral and written communications skills;
  • Ability to research and summarize biographical information;
  • Familiarity with digital cameras, scanners and basic photo editing;
  • Ability to efficiently plan research visits to sites throughout the county – from Palmdale to Long Beach, Malibu to Pomona.

ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER ARTS OUTREACH at the FORD AMPHITHEATRE

A program of the LA County Arts Commission, the Ford Amphitheatre hosts over 100 performing arts events each summer in its historic 1245-seat outdoor theatre in the Hollywood Hills.

The Ford's Community Bridges Program is a proactive effort to build bridges between the Ford and various parts of the greater Los Angeles community. Working directly with the Asian Pacific Islander Arts Coordinator, the intern will promote Community Bridges' mission of increasing participation of underserved segments of the community at the Ford, both in the audience and onstage. The intern will:

  • Coordinate ten workshops provided by the Community Outreach Partnership Program at sixteen community centers, which will be facilitated by the Ford's 2008 Summer Series artists.
  • Make presentations to community organizations.
  • Staff information booths at community events to build awareness of Ford Theatre events.
  • Identify, contact, and build substantive working relationships with community arts, social service, business, and educational organizations on behalf of the Ford and its programs.
  • Assist with translations and production for the Big!World!Fun! family performing arts series.
Skills/Requirements :
  • Knowledge of and/or direct experience working with one or more of the diverse segments that comprise the Asian-American communities in Los Angeles County
  • Proficiency in English and a second (Asian) language with outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Experience working with artists/performers
Eligibility:
  • Students must be currently enrolled in a community college, four-year college or university program.
  • Students must be undergraduates and not scheduled to graduate before December 2008.
  • Students must either reside in Los Angeles County or attend school in Los Angeles County.

Dates of Internships: May-June 2008 through August-September 2008.

Payment: $350 per week for a 40-hour workweek.

Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance Organizing Institute

The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, (APALA), AFL-CIO, Organizing Institute provides participants with the opportunity to be trained by some of the most seasoned Asian Pacific American union organizers from around the country and to connect to a national network of Asian Pacific American labor leaders.

2008 APIAVote Internship Program

The Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote) is a national nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that encourages and promotes civic participation of Asian Pacific Islander Americans in the electoral and public policy processes at the national, state and local levels. APIAVote envisions a society in which all Asian Pacific Islander Americans fully participate in and have access to the democratic process.

The APIAVote Internship Program strives to encourage and cultivate young Asian Pacific Islander student leaders to explore a career in the public sector or the political area. This summer internship program will also provide hands on experience and training on how to organize and implement voter activities to increase the participation of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the electoral process.

Internships Available in APIAVote National Headquarters – Washington, D.C.

I. ECAASU Internship

· Reports directly to Program Coordinator

· Establish conference, workshop and training materials to be presented at APA conferences

· Learn tactics for engaging and mobilizing youth voters

· Maintain communications for ECAASU and other youth coalitions

II. Communications/PR Internship

· Works directly under Communications Director

· Develop and implement communication strategy for AAPI political and civic engagement

· Learn how to take research and turn it into messaging for press and voters

· Use traditional and cutting-edge communications tools to empower voters

III. Campaigns/Elections Internship

· Works directly under Field Director

· Develop relationships with local organizations to mobilize voters across the nation

· Learn to differentiate between local and national field organizing

· Maintain communications between partner coalitions and local organizations

Requirements:
College or graduate student
Leadership abilities
Oral and written communication skills
Dedicated to promoting civic participation of Asian Pacific Islander Americans in the electoral and public policy processes
Commitment to work for a minimum of 10 weeks (25 hours/day) or equivalent in hours.
