Leadership & Diversity Training

Diversity Training

The EMBRACE (Educating Myself for Better Racial Awareness & Cultural Enrichment) Program is a leadership certificate program which provides training in cultural sensitivity, diversity, and multicultural communication.  The program is comprised of core and elective workshops offered throughout the fall and spring semesters.  Core workshops, taught by EMBRACE Facilitators, include Stereotypes: Helpful or Harmful, Actions Speak Louder Than Words, and others.  Elective workshops, taught by professionals in the field, include topics such as Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Issues, Dealing with Racism, Understanding "Isms," and others.

Spring 2006 Schedule
Beginning the week of March 20th

Tuesdays, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm OR
Fridays, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Internship Program

Each semester leadership opportunities are provided to students selected to work with the EMBRACE Program.  Students who have completed the EMBRACE Program through the Student Leadership Institute, will be eligible to apply for one of two following types of MLC Internship Positions:

EMBRACE Facilitator 
EMBRACE Facilitators work closely with the Student Leadership Institute and Leadership & Multicultural Development Programs staff.
EMBRACE Facilitators learn about themselves as well as current diversity issues and are trained to educate their peers through the implementation of cross-cultural communication workshops.
Leadership training for this internship position is provided through Speech Communications 499.

EMBRACE Director
  The EMBRACE Director works with the Coordinator of the MLC and Leadership & Multicultural Development Programs staff to direct, plan, design, and implement the EMBRACE Program.
  The Director is also responsible for serving as the liaison between the Student Leadership Institute Coordinating Committee and EMBRACE Facilitators.
  In addition, the Director assists with the training and supervision of EMBRACE Facilitators.

Diversity Workshops

The MLC Staff and Center Associates (trained diversity facilitators) are available to conduct diversity workshops for classes, departments, and organizations. Some sample workshops may be:

  • Introduction to Diversity
  • Social Identities and Leadership
  • Dealing with Racism

In order to schedule a workshop for your group, please send a request with the following information to the MLC Coordinator, Yen Ling Shek:

  • Name and contact information
  • Group/organization name
  • Goals for the workshop
  • Date and time
  • Location
  • Number of participants
