EMERGING LEADERS

The Emerging Leader Track is geared toward students who have not had much experience in being involved on campus or in their community. This track provides foundational knowledge and skills for students who want to make a difference through their involvement. This is an ideal track for incoming freshmen or for anyone who just wants to be more effective when working with others.

Students completing the track will receive a certificate of completion and will be recognized at the SLI Annual Recognition Ceremony.

OBJECTIVES:

bullet To have a better understanding of your leadership and communication style.
bullet To develop the basic skills necessary for effective leadership.
bullet Do some of the personal development and organizational work necessary to make you more a more effective leader.

BENEFITS:

bullet Understand how your personal preferences in communicating, conceptualizing, and taking in information affect how you work with others.
bullet Learn to better manage your time, both short term and long term.
bullet Develop a list of personal and leadership-related goals.

REQUIREMENTS:

To earn a certificate, students must complete sections A, B, and C, and complete a 5-hour Experiential Component.

Section A: Program Core Workshops - required of all SLI participants & can be completed in any order.

  • Introduction to Leadership
  • Ethical Decision Making
  • Leading and Managing a Diverse Group

Section B: Track Core Workshops - can be completed in any order.

  • Communication Styles (1.5 hours)
  • Meyers-Brigg Type Inventory (1.5 hours)
  • Teamwork and Collaboration (1.5 hours)
  • Time Management (1.5 hours)
  • Vision and Goal Setting (1.5 hours)

Section C: Elective Workshops - any two workshops from our pool of elective workshops, or through other conferences, offices, etc.

Section D: Experiential Component - a minimum of 5 hours of some activity outside of the classroom and workshop environment. (Click here for more information about the Experiential Component requirement).
