COMMUNITY COLLEGE

PARTNERS

In 2000, Santa Ana College (SAC) Student Activities office started a partnership with Cal State Fullerton’s Dean of Students Office, to establish a Student Leadership Institute program at the campus. This program was created to encourage SAC students to become effective leaders and develop their own personal awareness of leadership. Over the years, the SLI program at SAC provided training to various student government leaders, and the general SAC student population. During the first couple of years of implementation, the program provided on-going leadership workshops throughout the spring and fall semesters. In order to meet the needs of SAC students, the SLI model at this campus changed to a two-day conference model offered in the fall and spring semesters. The change in the program’s structure made the SLI accessible to larger number of SAC students.

In 2006 Santiago Canyon College (SCC), Student Services also pledged its commitment to implement a leadership training program using the Student Leadership Institute name, model, and program resources beginning in the 06 Fall semester. Coordination of the program is provided by the Student Life and Leadership Office of Santiago Canyon College. Since its establishment, the program has gained the interest and commitment from students, student government leaders, and faculty and staff. Although the program is still developing to best meet the needs of SCC students, the program currently follows a conference model similar to Santa Ana College.

Most recently, in 2012 Rio Hondo Community College has joined SLI as a third partner community college. The program is coordinated in collaboration by the Office of Student Life and Leadership. This program consists of three conferences held throughout the year that together compromise a certificate of completion.

In addition to earning a certificate of completion from their home campuses, SCC, SAC, and RHC students earn a certificate of completion from Cal State Fullerton and are recognized at the annual SLI Banquet held at the Cal State Fullerton campus. SCC, SAC, and RHC SLI students also have the opportunity to take free SLI workshops at Cal-State Fullerton.
