Both new and returning participants should sign up each semester for the Student Leadership Institute using the on-line version of the application.

Participants may request to extend the semester policy one additional semester.Those who wish to do so must either use the on-line version of the application, print the PDF file version of the application, or pick up a copy of the application in the Dean of Students Office, Titan Student Union Room 235.

SLI Scholarship

The Student Leadership Institute (SLI) Scholarship is designed to provide recognition to a participant in the Student Leadership Institute program who exemplified the programs mission, goals, values, and commitment to leadership. The award is meant to supplement the recipient’s educational funding needs and encourage further participation in leadership pursuits.

Experiential Component

SLI requires participants to apply their workshop knowledge and skills in a practical environment. Jobs, internships, club/organization and volunteer works are applicable to the experiential component, except EMBRACE and Global Leadership. Please note that a five-hour activity and one paper are needed for EVERY track, and each paper must entail the application of at least three track workshops (Section B only).

Step 1: Submit an Experiential Component Verification Form to SLI office at TSU 235 for approval.

Step 2: Do the activity!

Step 3: Get your Experiential Component Verification Form signed by a supervisor or advisor.

Step 4: Submit 2-3 page reflection paper addressing the following:

  • Brief description of the activity
  • Explicit content connected to at least three track workshop (Section B)
  • How you applied the concepts learned to the experience
  • *Please use the Rubric to assist you in completing your essay.

    Global Leadership

    Global Leadership Track participants are required to use one of the following programs for experiential component.

  • Volunteer International Peer
  • International Education Week, or International Women’s Day planning
  • Phi Beta Delta Student Board Member
  • Cross-Cultural Conversation Activities
  • Event approved by the Office of International Education and Exchange
  • Your 2-3 page paper must address:

  • What do the following terms mean personally to you: culture, diversity, or global leadership?
  • Describe your communication style or leadership style in your activity.

    ACTIVITIES FROM STUDENT LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

    SITM
    SITM is a semester/year-long position opened to all participants and comes with both responsibilities and benefits. SITMs/ensure that presenters can timely deliver a workshop and that attendance at workshops is properly recorded. Being a SITM will increase an individual’s leadership, public speaking and on-campus networking skills.

    Banquet Planning Committee
    BPC meets in the spring semester and assists the Student Leadership Institute Coordinating Committee in planning the annual Spring Banquet.

    Ambassador
    Ambassadors practicipate in a Spring Phonathon to establish connection with SLI Alumni and fundraise for the program.

    EMBRACE Facilitator
    Facilitators are instructor for EMBRACE workshops. This position also offers internship credit depending on majors. Prerequisite: Must complete EMBRACE Track before starting the position.

    Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen
    Participate in fun activities with children and help serve food.
    Location: Santa Ana

    Mary's Soup Kitchen
    Help distribute clothing and perform special tasks to support the homeless and low-income at the soup kitchen.
    Location: Orange

    Social Justic Summit Planning Committee
    Help coordinate the annual Social Justice Summit, which takes place every Spring. Learn about issues of inequality, oppression, environmental concern, and more. As a committee member, you will help decide what workshop topics, keynote speakers and special activities will be featured at this incredible event. Committee meetings are once a week on Friday mornings, and will begin meeting towards the end of September.

    Hunger and Homelessness Week Planning Committee
    Help coordinate our signature fall event which helps break down stereotypes about the hungry and homeless population and educate the campus community about how they can make a difference. We host a series of special events, such as exhibits, documentary nights, and discussions. Volunteers are needed to help planning and/or can help out on the event dates.

    Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA)
    It is a FREE national program sponsored and certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Each volunteer is certified by the IRS to prepare certain tax returns.

    The signed form and essay must be turned in by " April 8th, 2013" @ "5PM" in order to receive a certificate at the end of the year recognition banquet.
