Leadership Opportunities
The Student Leadership Institute program strives to give students different opportunities to take on leadership roles within our program. Below are different leadership opportunities we provide to our SLI participants. Student Intro Team Member (SITM)
A SITM is a SLI participant who would like to take on a little more leadership responsibility while they are involved in the program. This position is open to all participants and comes with both responsibilities and benefits. The role of a SITM is an essential element to the success of the workshops and SLI. SITMs ensure that presenters can timely deliver a workshop and that attendance at workshops is properly recorded. Being a SITM will increase an individual’s leadership, public speaking and on-campus networking skills.
Responsibilities:
- Making sure workshop meeting rooms are unlocked.
- Distributing and collecting presenter packets for workshops.
- Making important announcements.
- Greeting and introducing presenters.
- Conducting brief evaluation at end of workshop

SLI Banquet Planning Committee Member (BPC)
The BPC is led by the SLICC Assistant Director, Banquet Coordinator, and Events Coordinator. This committee meets in the spring semester and assists the Student Leadership Institute Coordinating Committee in planning the annual Spring Banquet.
Responsibilities:
- Attending BPC meetings
- Securing sponsors for the banquet
- Assist with decorations and setup
- Help select and invite speakers
- Facilitate registration and organization the day of the event
- Leadership skills
- Event planning skills
- Work and network with on campus leaders
- Having a say in what the banquet looks like
- End of the year recognition at the banquet and certificate of appreciation
SLI Coordinating Committee (SLICC)
SLICC is a group of 12 student leaders who run SLI under the direction of the SLI Coordinator. Each student leader has a specific position within the committee and is expected to fulfill their position for the duration of the entire school year. Examples of positions include, SLI Director, Marketing Coordinator, Newsletter Coordinator, Events Coordinator, and Technology Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
- Attending Fall and Spring Retreats and SLICC Meetings
- Event Planning
- Marketing SLI
- Conducting SLI orientations and presentations
- Completing SLI office hours
- Completing duties specific to the respective position
- Developing new skill sets such as public speaking, networking, and marketing
- Working closely with faculty and staff in the Dean of Students Office
- Networking with SLI presenters which include; CSUF faculty, staff and community members
- Working closely with a group of students who are passionate about leadership
- Receiving class/internship credit
- Receiving a certificate of appreciation and recognition at the SLI Banquet

Newsletter Committee
The newsletter committee is led by SLICC Newsletter Coordinator and SLICC Marketing Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
- Attend committee meetings
- Interviewing SLI participants, presenters, and campus leaders
- Interest in photography (optional)
- Communicating with Newsletter Committee

Educating Myself for Better Racial Awareness and Cultural Enrichment (EMBRACE) Facilitators
EMBRACE Facilitators are students who have completed the SLI EMBRACE Track and are interested in teaching the workshops themselves. Facilitators are trained to present six cross-cultural communication workshops during the fall and spring semesters. The program promotes awareness of cultural frames of references, the impact of stereotypes on cross-cultural interactions, and the importance of being effective and mindful communicators. Facilitators develop a deeper awareness of human, personal and social identities, an understanding of social group memberships, and the various forms of oppression, power and privilege as they appear in individual and interpersonal behaviors, intergroup relations, institutional structures, and societal norms.
Responsibilities:
- Attend mandatory training retreats
- Attend all trainings and practice sessions
- Assist in the recruitment of participants for the SLI / EMBRACE track
- Participate in facilitator meetings before the workshops and evaluation meetings after the workshops
- Discuss evaluations with professional staff and integrate feedback
- Assist with developing and distributing handouts for the workshops
EMBRACE Facilitators will develop:
- Facilitation and presentation skills
- Critical/analytic thinking skills
- Workshop planning skills
- Giving, receiving, and integrating feedback
- Specific content knowledge (i.e., race/ethnicity, gender/sexuality, spirituality/religion, class, and ability) relevant to diversity education
- Receiving class/internship credit
SLI Ambassador
Responsiblity:
1. Telephoning CSUF and SLI alumni to provide program updates and ask for financial contributions.
2. Conducting calls in a courteous and professional manner.
3. Gathering updated alumni contact information, including biographical, and/or demographic information.
4. Being knowledgeable about SLI, and can speak about the program in a positive and enthusiastic manner.
SLI Ambassadors must be available to volunteer at least one night of the SLI Phonathon held on a Tuesday and Wednesday in April
Volunteers must also be available to attend 1 training session the week prior.
All telephone calls will take place at the Cal State Fullerton’s University Advancement Call Center located in College Park, Room 850. Dinner will be provided to all volunteers on scheduled phonathon days.
