Where do stereotypes come from? Stereotypes are natural and part of everyone's system for viewing and dealing with the world. The workshop will illustrate that a negative evaluation of a behavior results in negative consequences.Actions Speak Louder Than Words (Part 1 and 2) (2 hours)
Why do we experience anxiety when we encounter or communicate with strangers? This workshop will demonstrate that people are often not aware of their behavior during encounters with others and bolster the idea that it is everyone's responsibility to attempt to understand and interpret effectively.Being Flexible in a Changing World (2 hours)
This workshop will develop understanding that many of the communicative situations we experience today require a higher tolerance for ambiguity. This workshop explores society's attitudes about race, ethnicity and culture, our search for our "roots" and the values and ideas that are associated with ethnicity.What Is Culture? (1.5 hours)
This workshop will provide a theoretical framework on the concept of culture, using the “ice-berg” analogy and culture shock theory as the basis for discussions. Activities will involve individual, reflective exercises as well as group interactions and comparisons of American and non-American cultures. Participants will learn coping strategies for adjusting to new cultures.Are You A Global Leader? (1.5 hours)
Students will explore the definitions and concepts of globalism, globalization, leadership, and global leadership. We will use personal stories of successful global leaders to identify literacies, competencies, and best practices of global leaders. Students will also do a self evaluation on their own global leadership competencies and explore community resources for individual and group development centered on global leadership.
Becoming an Effective Global Communicator (1.5 hours)
Students will learn and understand the definition of intercultural communication as a meaning-negotiating process. They will practice some intercultural communication competence techniques such as perception- checking, mindful interviewing, and suspending judgments. This workshop will discuss strategies to practicing values-driven leadership through identifying the difference between what people “want” to do and “should” do. Through case studies or scenarios, discussion and debate, techniques for handling very difficult and ambiguous situations will be explored. Models that can assist the decision-maker in choosing between “right and wrong” will be discussed.Introduction to Leadership (1.5 hours)

Discussion will focus on theories and models of leadership. Successful managers and leaders understand and educate themselves on the changing demographics within the community, the nation, and the world. This session will explore the impact that a diverse community may have in your personal interactions with others. You will also be challenged to re-examine your personal values and beliefs, and discover stereotypes and biases that you may hold. It will help students develop an openness and appreciation of differences, and underscore the richness that diversity can add to a group or organization.
