Peer Health Education

The Peer Health Education Certificate is a collaboration between the Student Leadership Institute and the Student Health Center. This track helps students learn how to teach their peers about living a healthy lifestyle. This track may be of particular interest to Natural Science, Nursing, and Pre-Med majors. Students can earn HESC 494 practicum units and participate in outreach activities (i.e. classroom presentations, campus wide workshops, awareness week activities) that promote healthy lifestyles. In order to receive course credit, students must volunteer at the Student Health Center in addition to completing the training.

Students completing the track will receive a certificate of completion and will be recognized at the SLI Annual Recognition Ceremony.

OBJECTIVES

bullet To increase knowledge of health issues relevant to college students.
bullet To develop and enhance presentation, advocacy, and group facilitation skills to be used during outreach activities on campus.
bullet To improve the health behaviors of students through student-to-student education and advocacy that promotes a physical and mental well-being.

BENEFITS

bullet Gain the skills and knowledge necessary to become an effective peer health educator.

REQUIREMENTS

To earn the Peer Health Certificate, students must complete Section A and attend weekly meetings (29 total hours of training) If students wish to receive HESC 494 practicum units, they need to complete an extra 11 hours per semester as a volunteer in the Health Education Department of the Student Health Center.

Section A: students will need to complete all the workshops in this section
Communication Styles (1.5 hours)
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues (1.5 hours)
Leading and Managing a Diverse Group (1.5 hours)
Public Speaking (1 hour)

Section B: Weekly meetings occur at pre-determined times. You will need to complete 23.5 hours.
