Public Service and Nonprofit Leadership

The Public Service and Nonprofit Leadership track fosters awareness of civic responsibility, as well as address issues relevant to political and community service. Students actively involved in the community or who want to pursue a career in politics, government, law, nonprofit, or any profession in the public service or advocacy sector will learn more about community and political leadership by completing this track.

Students completing the track will receive a certificate of completion and will be recognized at the SLI Annual Recognition Ceremony.

OBJECTIVE

bullet To connect classroom experience with leadership in the public service and the nonprofit fields.
bullet To bring about awareness to students about issues within the political and nonprofit arenas.
bullet To educate students about issues in community service leadership.
bullet Teach students about the call of civic duty and responsibility.

BENEFITS

bullet Develop skills related to political and community leadership.
bullet Apply concept of public service to student leadership positions.

REQUIREMENTS

To earn a Leadership for Public Service Certificate, students must complete Sections A, B, C, and D.

Section A: Program Core Workshops

Introduction to Leadership (1.5 hours)
Ethical Decision Making (1.5 hours)
Leading and Managing a Diverse Group (1.5 hours)

Section B: Track Core Workshops

Introduction to Organizational and Financial Management(1.5 hours)
Overview of Careers in Public Service and Nonprofit(1.5 hours)
Organizational Advancement Part 1(1.5 hours)
Organizational Advancement Part 2(1 hours)
Program Development and Proposal Writing(1.5 hours)

Section C: Elective Workshops

Any two workshops from the pool of Elective Workshops.

Section D: Experiential Component

Participants are required to complete a minimum of 5 hours of applied leadership. This can be pretty much any activity that participants are involved outside the classroom or workshop setting. Five hours are required for each track the participant is involved in. Participants must submit this form for approval by the SLI Coordinating Committee before April 11, 2008 in order to receive a certificate at the 2008 SLI Recognition Banquet.
