Orange County's Housing Authority reports that the percentage living in poverty is on the rise. In 1989, slightly more than 8 percent of the population or 200,000 people were living below the poverty level*. By 1998, this number increased to 323,655. The rising number of individuals falling below the poverty level, which is currently $16,450 for a family of four, widens the gap between the wealthy and the poor in the county. You can help the world by organizing clothing, toy, food, or book drives for the needy. You can also help by donating items or materials. Donate now!

Brea’s Community Volunteer Program: Brea Historical Society (714) 953-5757; Donate items of local historical significance to the museum or volunteer to help archive items such as photo and mementos.

Casa Teresa Home for Single Mothers: Orange (714) 538-4860; Volunteers are needed to host baby showers or events for the mothers. Monetary donations are also accepted.

Catholic Charities: Santa Ana (714) 668-1130; Donate food or volunteer to help distribute food at 7am on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC): Orange (714) 997-3000; Donate blankets and brand new toys to make a child’s day brighter! Contact Pat Dooley.

Episcopal Service Alliance: Anaheim (714) 385-1980; ESA’s primary purpose is to provide emergency assistance to needy persons in Orange County with food, clothing, transportation, and toiletries.

Make-A-Wish Foundation at Orange County: Tustin (949) 476-9474; Donate blankets, toys, clothes to make someone’s wish come true.

Olive Crest Homes and Services for Abused Children: Santa Ana (714) 543-5437 ext. 1144; Donate brand new toys, toiletries, blankets, clothes, and your time to the Olive Crest Homes.

Orange County Rescue Mission: Santa Ana (714) 258-4300; Donate nonperishable food items or volunteer to serve food to the needy.

Salvation Army: Anaheim (800) 728-7825; Donate any item you can for needy families. A pick up truck will pick up your items.

Shelter for the Homeless: Midway City (714) 897-3221; Donate can foods with pull off tops, travel size hygiene products, toiletries, and fast food certificates for needy people.

Women’s Transitional Living Center: Orange (714) 992-1939; This shelter for battered women and their children needs new toys for newborn-18 years of age. They can use new clothing for children and women, and household items and non-perishable food.

Working Wardrobes for a New Start: Rancho Santa Margarita (714) 210-2460; Working Wardrobes helps adults in crisis get back to work through many services offered. You can help out by donating clothes/accessories, office supplies, equipment, or funds and receive a tax deduction.

Anaheim Interfaith Shelter: Anaheim (714) 774-8502; Donate baby wipes, large diapers, personal hygiene items for families in shelter, gift certificates, box fans, twin sheets (sets), pots and pans, dish sets, silverware, glassware, gardening tools, and furniture (dining room table and chairs, TV’s, dressers).

Children’s Bureau of Southern California: Anaheim (714) 517-1900; Donate toys, educational activities, and clothing for children birth to 12 years of age.

Women Helping Women: Costa Mesa (949) 631-2333; In need of professional clothing and accessories for women (especially larger size women’s clothing). Volunteers are needed to sort and help clients “shopping” in the clothes closet.

Beyond Shelter YWCA: Fullerton (714) 871-4488; In need of soap, shampoo, conditioner, brushes, combs, wallets, paper and pens, pre-paid gas cards, bus passes, lotion, bubble bath, and gift certificates for single women in recovery from domestic violence. Beyond Shelter is also in need of food for food baskets all year.

Western Youth Service: Fullerton (714) 871-5646; Donate art supplies, a color TV and a VCR for parenting videos and toys to be used for play therapy.

Garden Grove 7th Day Adventist Church: Garden Grove (714) 534-4376; Donate canned food (fruit, meat, vegetables, and soup), fresh fruit and vegetables all year; baby items (diapers, wipes and formula). Volunteers are always needed.

Orange Grove Rehabilitation Hospital: Garden Grove (714) 534-1041; Donate toiletries, magazines, books, slippers, robes, sweaters, writing instruments, and note pads; monetary donations are also accepted.

American Lung Association of Orange County: Santa Ana (714) 835-5864; Volunteers are needed to help with data processing, client services, and processing donations. This association also needs monetary and vehicle donations.

Mercy House Transitional Living Centers: Santa Ana (714) 836-7188; Donate toiletry items for men, women and children (razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and shampoo), backpacks, gloves, warm hats, and phone cards. Volunteers are also needed to sort/pack food baskets and deliver donations.

Rebuilding Together Orange County: Orange County (714) 667-8174; Donate building materials and major appliances for their home rehabilitation project benefiting senior and disabled homeowners. Volunteers are needed to assist in their April rebuilding project.

Family Access Counseling Education Services: Santa Ana (714) 879-9616; Donate toys and games for their school outreach programs and volunteer for their children groups.
