Welcome to Computer Science

Do you enjoy a good challenge? Do you like to solve problems, create new things, and stay atop of technology? Would you like to coerce a hunk of plastic and silicon to obey your every command? Computer Science may be the field of study for you.

There are many varying areas of interest for computer scientists. Some computer professionals prefer to work with people, analyzing their needs for new or improved systems. They spend much of their time talking, writing, and interacting with people. Others are closer to the machine, and specialize in knowing details of hardware organization. Maybe you are not like those others though. Maybe you have a background in business and would like to develop commercial databases. If you like to write, perhaps you could take up writing manuals. With a Computer Science degree in tow, your choice of companies is just as vast. You may choose from huge organizations (a la Microsoft) all the way down to working out of your family garage (a la Steve Jobs). Many people even choose the life of a consultant: a specialist for hire.

Finally, there is no need to worry about computer professionals programming themselves out of a job. There will always be a need for specialists to maintain, program, and design computers. Even when it is not obvious, such as in an application you buy for your computer, computer scientists are at work. Consider the fact that someone had to write the program that you use to program your VCR! In the future, we can look forward to involvement in the next global network, exploration of other planets, and even intelligent machines. Computer professionals are everywhere!
