Emergency Procedures for Managers
Guidelines for Issues Involving Emergency Procedures on Campus
1. The President, Emergency Management Team and designated departments are responsible for deciding how the campus will respond to emergencies. There are three ways the campus can respond: (1) remain open, (2) close the campus without evacuation and (3) close and evacuate the campus. In certain cases the EOC Team will have some advance notice of a pending campus closure. Generally, the decision to close and evacuate campus will be made as an emergency situation evolves. Your building marshal, Division Vice President’s office, dean or department chair with serve as the communication link for you during emergency situations.
2. As a manager it is your responsibility to:
- Ensure that if off campus you have appointed a manager to be in charge during your absence, and communicate this information to your supervisor.
- Implement the plans you are directed to implement. Administrators will direct you as to the action to take.
- If there are special needs in your department advise your supervisor/administrator.
3. If the campus must close during daytime hours, you are expected to:
- Receive direction from your VP’s office and pass this information on to members of your Department.
- Remind your faculty/staff to turn off all non-essential equipment and lock their offices before leaving.
- Assume the campus will remain closed only on that specific day. The campus will open the following day unless you are otherwise informed.
- You can advise your faculty or staff to call (657) 278-0911 for 24-hour emergency updates.
4. If an emergency occurs during off hours and you are a designated member of the Emergency Operations Center Team, you may be requested to return to campus. We will utilize the University’s mass notification system to contact you if you are needed to return to campus. It is important that you keep your current contact information up to date in the CMS system. If for unforeseen reasons this system is down, inoperable or otherwise incapable of notifying you we request you return to campus as soon as you can safely do so.
5. When the campus is closed certain essential staff/management will need to remain. As a manager, it is your obligation to confirm with your supervisor/administrator if you are needed to stay and assist with the emergency situation.
6. Every building on campus has trained building marshals to assist you in emergencies. It is suggested you make an effort to get to know these individuals and support their efforts. If you or your staff would like to receive specialized training in handling emergencies please contact Sgt. Justin Hendee of the University Police at ext. 3572.
