Emergency Procedures Notice for Staff

Guidelines for Issues Involving Emergency Procedures on Campus

1. The President, Emergency Management Team and designated departments are responsible for deciding how the campus will respond to emergencies.  There are three ways the campus can respond: (1) remain open, (2) close the campus without evacuation and (3) close and evacuate the campus.  In certain cases the EOC Team will have some advance notice of a pending campus closure.  Generally, the decision to close and evacuate campus will be made as an emergency situation evolves.  Your supervisor/administrator will serve as your communication link during emergency situations and informing you of campus closures.

2. As a campus community member you have a responsibility to:

  • Keep your supervisor/administrator advised on any changes in your contact information.
  • Implement only the plans you are directed to implement. Your supervisor will advise you of any changes to the plan.
  • If you require any special considerations, make your supervisor aware of your needs.

3.   If the campus closes during normal daytime hours, you are expected to:

  • Receive direction from your supervisor and pass this information on via your phone tree to everyone in your area.
  • Follow any special directions you may receive via your supervisor, VP’s Office, your Building Marshals.
  • Remind faculty/staff to turn off all equipment and lock their offices prior to leaving.
  • Assume that the campus will only remain closed for this specific day. The campus will open the following day, unless you hear otherwise.
  • You can inform all faculty/staff to call (657) 278-0911 for 24-hour emergency updates.

4.  Depending on the type of emergency, some faculty and staff may be requested to return to campus to assist with the situation.

5.  Every building on campus has trained building marshals to assist you in emergencies.  It is suggested you make an effort to get to know these individuals and support their efforts. If you or your staff would like to receive specialized training in handling emergencies please contact Sgt. Justin Hendee of the University Police at ext. 3572.
