Who may participate in EAP?

Eleventh grade students who are considering applying to any of the 23 CSU campuses.

What is the EAP Process?

Students answer the EAP section of their CST tests. There is a time allocated during their normal testing schedule to take this portion of the test.

Depending on their test scores students are categorized in the following way:

EAP Process

Students will receive a letter categorizing them as exempt, non-exempt, or conditionally exempt by August.

Conditionally exempt students can fulfill the remediation requirements and become exempt from taking the test.

Approved Remediation courses for Conditionally Exempt students are as follows:

  • Taking and successfully completing with a grade C or better Algebra II for a second time with the approval of the high school;
  • Successfully completing with a grade of C or better a math course that requires Algebra II as a prerequisite;
  • Successfully completing with a grade C or better a statistics course that has Algebra II as a prerequisite and is on the A-G list of approved courses;
  • Successfully completing with a grade of C or better a physics or Chemistry course that has Algebra II as a prerequisite and is on the A-G list of approved courses;
  • Successfully completing with a grade of C or better a math course developed by the high school with the approval of the CSU Mathematics Faculty Validation Committee (e.g., courses such as modeling or finite mathematics);
  • Successfully completing a monitored, interactive, or multimedia individualized program (e.g., Aleks) with the approval of the CSU Mathematics Faculty Validation Committee; or
Successfully completing with a grade of C or better a community college mathematics course that satisfies the requirement in Quantitative Reasoning.



Where can non-exempt students requiring remediation go for help?

Currently there are two websites helpful to non-exempt students requiring remediation. Both provide diagnostics which will direct students to specific areas requiring improvement and both sites are FREE.

Mathematics:
The Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project. Students may take this diagnostic test of topics needed for success in a Pre-calculus course. This 37 question multiple choice test is designed to be taken without a calculator. The recommended time needed for taking this test is approximately one hour, but there is no enforced time limit.

Students may also visit the Math Success Site for ELM test prep information and practice problems.

English:
Students submit a written essay through the Diagnostic Writing Service and will receive comments from an official CSU or UC reader. The site provides meaningful comments on essay content, flow, etc.

Students may visit the English Success Site for EPT test prep information.


Does passing the EAP exams guarantee admission to a CSU campus?

No.  It will only waive the ELM and/or EPT if the student has received test results of English College Ready (Exempt) or Mathematics College Ready (Conditionally Exempt) and successfully completed the senior year math experience.

 

What are the specific CSU exemption alternative for proficiency in addition to the EAP test?

English Proficiency                                                               
• Score of 550 or above on the verbal section of the SAT I                                                                              
• Score of 680 or above on the SAT II: Writing Test                                                                    
• Score of 24 or above on the ACT                                    
• Score of 3, 4, or 5 on either the Language and Composition or Literature and Composition examination of the AP Program                                                                   
• Completion and transfer to the CSU of a college course that satisfies the requirement in English Composition, with a grade of C or better

Mathematics Proficiency                                                     
• Score of 550 or above on the SAT I                                                                                    
• Score of 550 or above on Level IC or IIC of the SAT II: Math Test                                                           
• Score of 23 or above on the ACT                                     
• Score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC examination                                                                    
• A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Statistics examination                                                                                        
• Completion and transfer to the CSU of a college course that satisfies the requirement in Quantitative Reasoning, with a grade of C or better.
