New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is a great opportunity for you to meet fellow new students and make valuable connections with current Cal State Fullerton students, faculty and staff. New students who make these connections and create these friendships tend to be more successful in their transition to college. In fact, students who attend orientation are more likely to achieve better grades and graduate!

New Student Orientation (NSO) is MANDATORY for all first-time freshmen (admitted for fall 2010). All first-time freshmen admitted for fall 2010 must sign upfor a New Student Orientation session no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2010 in order to attend Cal State Fullerton in the fall.

Signing up for NSO confirms your intent to attend CSUF. If you do not sign up for a session date, you will risk losing your admissions offer to the university.

Can My Family Attend?

Family members are highly encouraged to participate in their student’s transition to the university by attending their own Parent Orientation session. Offered at the same time as the student session, Parent Orientation is a great opportunity for family members to get acquainted with the academics and resources at Cal State Fullerton, as well as learn more about the changes both students and families will experience during the first year. New Student Programs strongly believes family participation is invaluable during this time of change, and although not mandatory, participation is strongly encouraged. Attendance is limited to two family members per student.

During Parent Orientation, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Hear from campus leadership and current students
  • Learn about graduation requirements and college-based resources
  • Take a campus tour
  • Participate in a student services resource fair
  • Ask any questions you may have
  • Share a meal and get acquainted with other family members!

Students and family members will be attending separate programs but there will be an opportunity to get together at the end of the day.

How Do I Know When To Attend? When you visit the registration website, your orientation program date will be determined by your major (including undeclared students) and/or any specialized university program you are participating in. Fee Waiver
If you have filed a 2010-2011 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the March 2nd priority deadline, you will be considered for a waiver of the $60 New Student Orientation (NSO) program fee. To receive an NSO fee waiver, you must qualify for the maximum Federal Pell Grant, based on a zero "Estimated Family Contribution” (EFC) as determined by federal guidelines. If you have been approved for a fee waiver, you will be informed of this at the time you sign up for New Student Orientation via the website.

Be sure to check your financial aid status regularly beginning in early April and submit any documents requested to complete your file.
What If I Want to Take
Summer Classes?
All incoming freshmen who do not pass the English and/or Mathematics placement examinations must take the remedial courses their first semester. We strongly encourage you to complete this remedial coursework during summer session.

If you plan on taking a summer course, you must choose a New Student Orientation session date that does not conflict with your summer class schedule.

For further information regarding summer classes, please click here.

Please note: Attending courses during summer does NOT remove your fall 2010 academic advisement hold. Only by attending New Student Orientation can you remove your fall advisement hold and receive priority registration for your fall 2010 courses.
What If I Have Special Needs? If you have any disability related accommodation needs (i.e. large print materials, printed materials converted to Braille, interpreters, etc.) please call (657) 278-3117.  The staff in the Office of Disabled Student Services is available to assist you in making the most of your orientation experience.
