Katie is a high school graduate of Downey High School in Downey, California. Because she had earned a scholarship to a local community college, and because she wanted to explore her options, she decided to enter the community college system prior to entering a university. In addition, she knew that as a community college transfer student she would be able to transfer to the college of her choice.
Katie attended Cypress College where she earned over 60 units during a 2 ½ year time period. She credits her transfer center, the honors program, and her instructors with helping her to prepare for and transfer to Cal State Fullerton. Further, she believes that her community college counseling class helped her explore her interests and to identify some goals.
After a thorough search, Katie selected Cal State Fullerton because it was affordable, it offered what she saw as the best business program, and because it offered her the opportunity to establish her independence without being too far from home.
To Katie, the transition to Cal State Fullerton was easy because she was not afraid to ask for help. By accepting on-campus employment, she met a number of professional staff who ultimately helped her to succeed at the university.
Katie’s recommendation to all transfer students is, “Make a plan while at you are at the community college and stick with it. It’s not going to happen unless you make it happen.”
Katie graduated from Cal State Fullerton in May, 2005 with a major
in Women’s Studies and a minor in Business
Administration.
She is currently living in Montana and is working with the Domestic
Violence Emergency Services (DOVES) program as an Americorp/Vista
volunteer.
