Rank
Faculty are compensated based on their current academic rank
and in accordance with the CSU Salary Schedule. Faculty salaries
are established via collective bargaining between the bargaining
agent (CFA) and the Trustees of the CSU. Instructional Faculty
ranks include: Assistant, Instructor, Lecturer, Assistant
Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. For tenured
and probationary faculty, a promotion is required to move
from one rank to the next higher rank.

Salary
Schedule
The CSU Salary Schedule lists minimum and maximum monthly
and annual salary for each rank. A copy of the salary schedule
is available for reference in the office of Faculty Affairs
and Records, and it may be accessed electronically on the
Faculty Affairs and Records' website. When changes occur,
an extract of the CSU Salary Schedule that lists information
for most faculty ranks is distributed by the office of Faculty
Affairs and Records.

Increases in the base pay of faculty unit employees can occur
when a faculty unit employee receives an increase for Market

those fiscal years in which the CSU and CFA agree to provide
increases in one or more of the following categories: across
the board general salary increases; Faculty Merit Increases
(FMI); and/or Service Salary Increases (SSI).

Payroll
Procedures
Pay warrants are issued once a month on state pay days
as noted on the current year's Academic Calendar. The
Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs establishes
the Academic Calendar which specifies the beginning and
ending dates for each semester and the academic year,
the academic holidays and academic pay periods, as well
as other key dates for significant academic activities.
Academic Calendars are published in the University Catalog,
and copies are available from the Office of the Vice President
for Academic Affairs and the office of Faculty Affairs
and Records.

Academic-Year
Faculty Positions
An academic-year faculty who completes all service required
for the year shall be paid in twelve equal installments,
payable on state pay days covering the period of one year.
A change in timebase, such as a full or partial leave without
pay, or receiving any part of your compensation from a twelve-month
position, that occurs during the fall semester has implications
for the following August paycheck and for benefits for the
following September. Faculty Affairs and Records or Payroll
Services can explain in detail the effect of such changes.

Ten-Month
Faculty Positions
Individuals in this classification who complete all service
required for the year shall be paid in twelve equal installments,
payable on state pay days. The appropriate administrator
determines the specific ten months of an employee's work
schedule.

Twelve-Month
Faculty Positions
Faculty who are paid from either a portion or all of a
twelve-month position (in contrast to academic-year faculty
positions) do not necessarily receive salary in equal installments.
Twelve-month positions are paid on the basis of twelve pay
periods of 21 - 22 work days each. The amount earned in
any one of those pay periods depends on the number of work
days the individual was on duty and will be reduced if only
a portion of the month is actually worked. Thus, when you
move into the position and later when you move out of it,
your payroll warrant will reflect some portion of the regular
amount. Moving from a twelve-month position to an academic
year position at a time other than the beginning of the
academic year may have implications for your August pay
and September benefits. Check with either Payroll Services
or Faculty Affairs and Records about the implications of
making this type of transition.
