AMERICA READS & COUNTS
Federal Work-Study Program

(You may want to print this information for future
reference)
What is America Reads? The America Reads & Counts (ARC)
program at Cal State Fullerton (CSUF) meets the challenge to higher education and the community
to address the low reading and math levels of children in 6 - 8th grade. Implementation of
this program will positively affect the reading and math levels of students who would otherwise
struggle through and/or possibly drop out of school, and will prepare them for college-preparatory level course work.
What are Titan Tutors? Titan Tutors are CSUF students
who will tutor children lacking the reading and math skills necessary for success in school.
Titan Tutors will work in elementary schools, or in one of the after school centers under
the guidance of classroom teachers or site personnel. Tutors will have the opportunity to
read to children, assist them in their reading, writing, or math skills, play reading and
math games with the children, and take them to the library. The Titan Tutor position requires
excellent communication skills with children, good interpersonal skills, and a positive
attitude towards learning. Selected tutors will be paid $10.00 per hour.
What are the benefits of participating in ARC? Participation provides many benefits;
you are invited to join your peers who are tutoring our future generations.
- You gain valuable work experience that you can include in your resume upon your graduation,
- Your tutor earnings will assist in meeting your college expenses,
- Tutoring provides networking opportunities with public education professionals, and
- Federal Work-Study (FWS) earnings are not counted as income in determining your future
financial aid eligibility, which means there is a greater chance that you will continue
to have FWS eligibility the following academic year.
