College of Humanities and Social Sciences

These scholarships have been established to assist students majoring in one of the departments of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). Unless otherwise indicated, more information and application forms can be obtained in the Office of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs,
Humanities-211.
Note: For all scholarships, the notification process does not include a notification to all applicants but only to the selected recipient of the scholarship. The expected date of notification is by the end of May.
Carroll Craik Scholarship
Amount: Varies
Established by: This scholarship was established to honor a former staff member in the Department of Sociology to provide recognition on academic excellence and merit. The award amount varies and will be applied toward registration fees.
Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing Sociology major students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree.
Criteria: 3.0 GPA
Application Procedure: 1) Complete the application form that can be obtained from the Sociology Department, H-730M; 2) Write a brief statement not to exceed 250 words describing your service to the University, including the department of Sociology;
3) Provide one letter of support from a Sociology Faculty member attesting to your academic success and service contributions; and 4) Submit all materials to Ms. Jenny Amaro-Bussey, Department of Sociology, H-730M.

Nancy Fitch Women’s History Award
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This scholarship was established by Dr. Nancy E. Fitch, a professor of European history, who wishes to encourage students to study women’s history by using new teaching technologies.
Open to: This scholarship is open to any CSUF undergraduate or graduate student in any discipline or department.
Criteria: Interest in women’s history • Academic achievement • Financial need

Leon and Annette Gilbert Study Abroad Scholarship
Amount: Two $500 awards
Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Dr. Leon Gilbert and his wife Annette to assist students in meeting their educational expenses in a student program. Dr. Gilbert is a Professor Emeritus from the Modern Languages & Literature department. The recipients will be selected by a Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) scholarship committee.
Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing HSS students who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree and have been accepted to a California State University sponsored study abroad program.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA

Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Life Achievement Awards
Amount: Two $500 awards
Established by: This scholarship is funded by contributions from Humanities and Social Sciences alumni.
Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing HSS students who have returned to school after raising a family, establishing a career, or having to overcome other personal obstacles.
Criteria: Scholastic achievement • Financial need • Personal achievements

International Leadership Scholarship
Amount: $500
Established by: This scholarship was established by the Alumni Association and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) to assist students in meeting educational expenses while studying in a California State University (CSU) sponsored Study Abroad program. Five $500 scholarships will be awarded; two scholarships for this summer term, one for the Fall semester, and one for the Spring semester.
Open to: This scholarship is open to currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at Cal State Fullerton’s College of HSS who have been accepted to a CSU sponsored Study Abroad program.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA • International leadership activities
Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Write a 500-1000 word, typed statement that addresses, either: a) your current leadership activities which promote international understanding, or b) how you will use your study abroad experience as preparation for future international leadership activities; and 3) Submit application materials to H-211, Dean’s Office Scholarship Committee.

Schweitzer First Quarter Fund Scholarship
Amount: Two $500 awards
Established by: This scholarship is awarded annually and is funded by contributions from Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) graduating students and alumni through the First Quarter Fund.
Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing HSS students.
Criteria: Scholastic achievement • Financial need

Don A. Schweitzer Memorial Scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences
Amount: $800 (and name on perpetual plaque)
Established by: This scholarship was established in the Fall of 1993 to honor the memory of Vice President Don A. Schweitzer. Dr. Schweitzer joined the CSUF faculty in 1969 as a professor in the Psychology department. He held positions as Dean and Vice President, Academic Affairs. Professor Schweitzer demonstrated a lifelong dedication to excellence in higher education.
Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing full-time upper division CSUF students with a major in the College
of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Established by: This scholarship was created by a generous donation from her daughter, Sharon Sekhon, to honor the memory of her mother, Margarete Liebe Sekhon.

David Jon Vaca Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship in American Studies

Established by: This scholarship was established by the John and Marietta Vaca family in 1984 in memory of their son and is awarded each semester.

Earl James Weaver Graduate Student Essay Prize

Established by: This award was established in 1994 by American Studies Alumni to honor Dr. Earl James Weaver, the department’s co-founder and first emeritus professor. A three-member faculty committee reviews the papers and makes the award each Spring semester.
Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing American Studies graduate students.

Conservation Award

Established by: This award was established to recognize on-going work in the area of conservation-related research, which is broadly defined to include studies of non-human primates, environmental consequences of political economy, and individual resources utilized. Jenkins-Douglas-Gardner Award

Established by: This award commemorates three promising young archeologists, Ronald Douglas, Bruce Jenkins and Edward Gardner, whose lives were cut short in a tragic plane crash in 1981 while returning from the field. Sadovszky International Research Award

Established by: This award was established to recognize Anthropology students who have done, or propose to do, anthropological research outside of the United States. It is named after its founder, the late Professor Otto Von Sadovszky, a former Anthropology department faculty member who encouraged student research at all levels. Dan Byrnes Scholarship
Amount: $500—$1,000
Established by: This award was created by his family and friends to honor the memory of Dan Byrnes, former chief of Public Safety at Cal State Fullerton. Preference for the scholarship is given to criminal justice, political science or public administration majors.
Open to: This award is open to any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student who plans a career as a sworn officer in law enforcement and who will be enrolled full-time at CSUF for the next academic year. Past recipients are ineligible to apply.

Established by: This scholarship was established by DeSales Kohl and John Leo Coval to honor and recognize adult reentry students who are single parents holding academic and professional promise. They must also be making satisfactory progress toward a Baccalaureate Degree.
Open to: This award is open to an adult reentry student, pursuing a baccalaureate degree, currently enrolled in at least 6 units, and who will be continuously enrolled in at least 6 units in the Fall semester. Candidate will also be head of household and a primary caregiver to one or more dependent children.

Established by: This award was established by Hilda L. and Daniel C. Holloway in memory of their daughter, Kimberly Anne Holloway, 2002, a graduate of the Department of English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics. The scholarship will recognize a student for academic excellence and assist the winner to complete a Baccalaureate Degree in English, Comparative Literature or Linguistics.

Established by: This scholarship was established by Charles and Karen Ayres in memory of Mary Lois Ayres to provide support to students who are pursuing careers in the field of aging or Gerontology.
Open to: This scholarship is open to junior/senior students with a minor or concentration in Gerontology or to a first year graduate student who has been accepted into the M.S. Gerontology Degree program.

Beverly and Arnold Miller University Scholarship in Gerontology
Amount: $1,000 to $1,500 (up to 8 awards)
Established by: This scholarship is an endowed program established by Beverly and Arnold Miller to provide support to students who are pursuing careers in Gerontology. Awards are given annually with the opportunity to be renewed with demonstrated recipient accomplishments. Finalists may be asked to participate in an interview.

HISTORY
Carmen Delphine Bayati Memorial Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This scholarship is named for Carmen Delphine Bayati, a reentry student who graduated in 1993 with a B.A. in history. The memorial scholarship was established in 1993 by her husband, Khatan, and her sister after Carmen’s untimely death. Two to four awards may be given annually. The scholarship will be judged by the History Department Development Committee. For purposes of this scholarship, a reentry student is one who dropped out of or postponed undergraduate education for at least one full academic year. Applicant must have been enrolled at CSUF for at least two semesters prior to the Spring semester in which the award is given. Must have completed a minimum of nine units of history at CSUF and must continue to be enrolled at CSUF for the next full academic year.

Warren Beck Outstanding History Student Award

Established by: This scholarship is funded by the History Alumni Association to honor Dr. Warren Beck, member and former chair of the History Department faculty until his death in 1991. Winner of the CSUF Outstanding Professor Award, Professor Beck was a noted teacher and scholar. The award will be judged and given by the History Alumni Association for intrinsic interest in history, which could be manifested in professional activities such as projects, papers, and participation in historical activities. Preference is given to a student who intends to use history in a career or in preparation for a career.

Lawrence B. deGraaf Outstanding Graduate Student Award
Amount: $500
Established by: This award is funded by the History Alumni Association. It honors Professor Lawrence B. de Graaf, a founding member of the CSUF faculty, and dedicated teacher and advisor to students. The award will be judged for interest in history, which could be manifested in professional activities such as projects, papers, and participation in historical activities. Preference is given to a student who intends to use history in a career or in preparation for a career. The award will be judged and given by the History Alumni Association. The, applicant should have taken a minimum of 12 units in history graduate classes at CSUF and have been enrolled in the CSUF history graduate program for at least one year.

Jorice Maag Local History Scholarship
Amount: $800
Established by: This scholarship is funded by the Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum to encourage the study of California history with preference given to those interested in local history. History is defined as the study of topics relating to the immediate area of the campus, Orange County and the surrounding areas, or of persons and institutions in these areas engaging in activities that promote, conserve and/or exhibit such history. The scholarship may not be awarded more than twice to the same individual.

Open to: This scholarship is open to graduate students enrolled in the Cal State Fullerton TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program.

Alamshah, professor of Philosophy, founding member and first chair of the Philosophy Department, and recognizes the best creative philosophy essay. The essay will be judged according to the thoughtfulness of the approach or the skillfulness with which it is executed.

Dan Byrnes Scholarship

Established by: This award was created by his family and friends to honor the memory of Dan Byrnes, former chief of Public Safety at Cal State Fullerton. Preference for the scholarship is given to criminal justice, political science or public administration majors.
Open to: This award is open to any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student who plans a career as a sworn officer in law enforcement and who will be enrolled full-time at CSUF the next academic year. Past recipients are ineligible to apply.

Established by: This scholarship is named for Genevieve Anderson, who was an outstanding alumna (B.A. 1988) and who played an active role in Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology students. She was pursuing a doctorate at Dartmouth until her death in 1991.

Professor Loh Seng Tsai Memorial Scholarship

Established by: This scholarship is named for Professor Loh Seng Tsai who was a distinguished scholar and outstanding teacher. He was born in China, received his Ph.D from the University of Chicago and joined the Department of Psychology at CSUF in 1965. He retired from the university in 1973 and died in 1993 at the age of 91. He was named professor of the year in 1971 and was a recipient of many honors, including a Distinguished Teaching Award and nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Open to: This scholarship is open to graduating seniors who have been accepted into a Ph.D program in Psychology and to current M.A. or M.S. students planning for Ph.D admission.
