What kinds of financial aid are available to continuing students for summer?

State University Grant

A limited amount of State University Grant (SUG) funding is available to assist you in paying your summer fees. To qualify:

  1. You must have a 2008-2009 FAFSA on file.
  2. Your 2008-2009 Expected Family Contribution (EFC) must be $4000 or lower.
  3. You must be a California resident.
  4. You must not be receiving funds from another source to pay your fees (e.g., Cal Vet fee waiver, scholarships specifically designated for fee payment).
  5. You must be enrolled as an undergraduate, teaching credential candidate or graduate student. (SUG is not available for second bachelor's degrees or unclassified post-baccalaureate students.)
    • If you are enrolled in any of the following special programs, please contact the financial aid office to determine your eligibility:
      • MS in Nursing - Anesthesia, School Nursing Concentration, Women's Health Care Concentration, Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration, Entry level;
      • BS in Nursing – Distance Learning;
      • MS in Instructional Design and Technology;
      • MS in Education – Educational Administration;
      • ED.D in Education Leadership
    • The following programs are not eligible for State University Grant funds:
      • MS in counseling Garden Grove Program;
      • FEMBA Program;
      • MS in Taxation Irvine Campus
  6. You must enroll in 3-6 summer units. Funds are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis so enroll early.

We will award SUG in an amount to cover registration fees for up to 6 units. If you enroll in more than 6 units, you are responsible for paying the balance of your fees unless you qualify for a Federal Pell Grant or Federal Loan to pay the difference. back to top

Summer State University Grant (SUG) is funded by the State of California to assist students with educational expenses. Students must be California residents and must demonstrate need. You must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 units to receive a SUG payment. CSUF summer award for undergraduates, for teaching credential candidates, and for graduate students is $1100.

What happens if you drop one or more classes after receiving a SUG payment?

If you receive a SUMMER SUG payment and drop below 3 units, you may be billed. If you drop below 3 units before the start of classes, we will cancel your SUMMER SUG (SEE SUMMER REFUND POLICY IN SUMMER SCHEDULE OF CLASSES).

Federal Pell Grant

If you are an undergraduate who received Federal Pell Grant in Fall 2008 and/or Spring 2009, but did not receive a full-time payment one or both terms, you may have remaining 2008-09 Pell Grant available for summer. When you enroll in summer courses, we will automatically check to see if you have remaining Pell Grant available to be applied to your summer enrollment.

If you are a teaching credential candidate who received Federal Pell Grant in Fall 2008 and/or Spring 2009, but did not receive a full-time payment for one or both terms, you may have remaining 2008-2009 Pell Grant available for summer. In addition, you must be enrolled in at least 6 units of teaching credential courses . Prerequisite or 'waiver' courses are not included in calculating your enrolled units for purposes of the Federal Pell Grant program. back to top

Federal Stafford Loan

If you did not borrow the annual federal loan limit for your grade level in 2008-2009, you may have Federal Stafford Loan eligibility available to be used for summer. Financial Aid Counselors are available to assist you in determining your loan eligibility.

In some cases, we may recommend you apply for additional Fall 2008/Spring 2009 loan instead of a summer loan. This will occur if you have unmet need for Fall/Spring that could be met with Stafford loan. The advantages to taking additional academic year loan over a summer loan are:

  • Deadline to submit loan application is 05/08/09.
  • You have the flexibility to use the additional academic year funds now or for summer.
  • Your eligibility to receive the loan funds will be based on your Spring 2009 enrollment; therefore, the 6-unit enrollment requirement for summer will not apply.
  • We anticipate you will receive your funds before the summer term begins if you submit your loan request by May 7, 2009. (By contrast, a loan processed for summer will be forwarded to your lender only after we verify you have enrolled in at least 6 units for summer. Disbursement will occur about 10 days after we forward your loan to your lender but not earlier than the first day of your first summer class.) back to top

Cal Grant A and B

If you have been awarded a Cal Grant A or B and you will enroll in at least 6 units of summer classes, you may be able to use future Cal Grant eligibility for summer. If you enroll in 6 units, you will use one half of one semester of eligibility. If you enroll in 7 or more units you will use a full semester of eligibility.

Instructions for requesting and completing the summer Cal Grant request form:

New 2009-10 Cal Grant A and B recipients may not activate their grant during their summer 2008/09 attendance. New recipients must begin payment in the fall of 2009-2010 academic year. Payment for non-mandatory summer coursework (June-August 2009) is available for all renewal grant recipients. The Commission must receive your request no later than the end of your summer term.

Please note: Summer payments will reduce your total program eligibility for Cal Grant benefits. Be sure to consult with your school financial aid office to maximize the use of your Cal Gant.

What are the enrollment requirements to receive summer aid?

The summer enrollment requirements vary by financial aid program and sometimes by degree being sought as follows:

  • To receive a SUG, you must enroll in at least 3 units.
  • To receive a loan, you must enroll in at least 6 units.
    Graduate Master's Degree students must be enrolled in the equivalent of 6 units of courses numbered 400 or higher (lower division courses do not earn unit credit and, therefore, do not meet the enrollment requirement).
  • To receive a Cal Grant, you must enroll in 6 or more units and make a request to use your Cal Grant funds to the California Student Aid Commission (see Cal Grant process unless you are a teacher credential student).
  • To receive a Federal Pell Grant, there is no set minimum number of units (unless you are a teaching credential student). Your particular enrollment requirement will be based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). For detailed examples of Pell Eligibility CLICK HERE.

    Teaching credential students
    : To receive a Federal Pell Grant, you must be classified as a 'PBC' (post-baccalaureate credential) student by the CSUF Office of Admissions. In addition, you must be enrolled in at least 6 units of teaching credential courses. Prerequisite or 'waiver' courses are not included in calculating your enrolled units for purposes of the Federal Pell Grant program. back to top

Is there a deadline to apply for summer aid?

State University Grant (SUG) – Although you do not need to apply for SUG, you must register in at least 3 units of summer coursework by May 7th and meet the eligibility requirements in order to receive an award.

Pell Grant – There is no deadline; we will automatically award you by the end of the summer if you have unused Fall and/or Spring eligibility and enroll in summer courses.

Stafford Loan – Applications received will be processed on a rolling basis in order of date received. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for processing.

If you do not submit your summer loan request form in time for us to process prior to your registration, you may either:
  • Pay your registration fees yourself. (If you pay your fees yourself and later qualify for financial aid, you will receive a refund of the financial aid shortly after the start of your first summer course. See "How will my summer aid be disbursed?" below.)

    - OR -

  • Postpone your registration until your financial aid has been established. back to top

How will you determine my summer awards?

  1. We will award you a SUG automatically if you meet the eligibility requirements and funds are available. Since funds are limited, we will award SUG on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date you register for summer classes.
  2. We will automatically award you a summer Pell Grant if you have remaining eligibility to be applied to summer.
  3. We will consider you for a summer loan only if you submit a summer loan request. back to top

How will I be notified of my summer aid awards?

Once we have determined your summer eligibility, we will send you an email notification if you are eligible for a State University Grant (SUG). If you are Pell eligible, you will receive an award revision email by the end of the summer and a letter notification if you apply for a summer loan. Be sure to read the Terms and Conditions for receipt of summer funds.  back to top

What is the process to receive a summer loan?

If you submit a summer loan request, we will provide an estimate of your summer loan eligibility based on your planned enrollment which includes your exact courses, costs and dates of your summer enrollment. Staff will determine the loan that best meets your circumstances. back to top

How will I pay my registration fees?

You are responsible for paying your summer registration fees. If your financial aid funds are not disbursed for any reason, you will be billed for payment and a hold may be placed on your Fall 2009 registration until your summer fees are paid.

When you register for summer classes, you will be advised of your account balance, if any, and the date by which you must pay your balance.

  • If financial aid has been established for you and your award fully covers your fees,
    1. You will not need to make a payment and will not be dropped from your classes.
    2. Your fees will be paid automatically when your financial aid is disbursed at the beginning of your first summer class, provided you meet all of the requirements to receive a payment.
    3. If you have any remaining Pell grant eligibility, you will be notified and disbursed the funds by the end of the Summer 2009 term.
  • If your financial aid award has not yet been determined at the time you register,
    1. You will be advised of the amount owed and the due date by which you must make payment.
    2. Failure to pay your fees by the specified due date may result in your disenrollment.
  • If your financial aid award is not sufficient to pay your full fees at the time you register, you will be advised of the amount owed and the due date by which you must make payment.
    1. A hold may be placed on your Fall 2009 registration until your balance is paid. back to top

How and when will my financial aid be disbursed?

The first disbursement for Summer 2009 will be May 29, 2008 and weekly throughout the summer. In most cases, summer aid will be paid at the beginning of your first summer course. If you have any funds remaining after your summer registration fees have been credited, a balance check or direct deposit will be issued to you. back to top

What happens if I withdraw from a class?

Before you drop a summer class, read the refund and withdrawal policies in the Summer 2009 Class Schedule.

Partial Withdrawal: If you receive financial aid for Summer 2009 and you drop one or more classes but not all classes before the end of the session, you may be required to repay part or all of the funds you received.

Full Withdrawal: If you receive financial aid for Summer 2009 and you withdraw from all courses before the 60% point of the term, we will calculate the portion of financial aid you "earned" based on the number of days you were enrolled. You may be billed for unearned financial aid. back to top

What is "Satisfactory Academic Progress"?

To maintain eligibility for financial aid, you must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress. This means you must complete the courses in which you enroll and you must earn a passing grade (A, B, C, D, CR) in each course. Your progress will be monitored at the end of the Spring 2010 semester.

If I am willing to give up a future semester of Cal Grant eligibility, how do I apply to use my Cal Grant funds for summer enrollment? And, what is the processs?

If you have received a renewal Cal Grant A or B award from the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) for the 2008-2009 school year and you will enroll in at least 6 units of summer classes, you may be able to use Cal Grant eligibility for summer. Cal Grant eligibility is limited to four years. If you elect to use Cal Grant eligibility for summer school, you will use up one semester of eligibility if you enroll in 7 or more units or one half of one semester of eligibility if you enroll in 6 units.
  1. You must complete and submit a Cal Grant 2009/10 G-14 Summer Payment request. Which will be available as of March 2009.
  2. CSAC will consider your request and, if funds are available, they will approve your request. Because CSUF does not require summer attendance, CSAC will only pay if state funds are available.
  3. If approved, CSAC will inform you and the campus.
  4. CSAC will forward Cal Grant funds to the campus. Since you are using academic year eligibility when receiving Cal Grant funds in the summer, your specific summer expenses are not considered. Your award will be the same as if received in a normal Fall or Spring semester.
  5. Next, your enrollment will be confirmed and your Cal Grant funds will be disbursed (a minimum of 6 units of enrollment is required). If you have any funds remaining after your summer registration fees have been credited, a balance check or direct deposit will be issued to you. back to top
