A security freeze on your credit file means that your information will not be released to potential creditors, insurance companies, or employers. To place a freeze on your account you will have to contact all three of the credit bureaus. The fee is typically $10 to place a freeze which will remain in effect until you end it; there is no charge to end the freeze. You may temporarily lift the freeze if you know that a creditor or employer will be checking your credit history for a fee of $10-$12. For more information on how to put a security freeze on your account, frequently asked questions, or to obtain a sample letter to send to each of the three credit bureaus, please consult the California Department of Consumer Affairs at http://www.privacyprotection.ca.gov/sheets/cis10securityfreeze.htm.
