A program sponsored by Southern California Edison that supports 10 community college transfer student scholarships annually, with matching funds from Cal State Fullerton, begins its second year this fall. The scholarships aid minority transfer students with demonstrated financial need who are majoring in one of the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines.

“We have a strong commitment, as does Cal State Fullerton, to community college transfer initiatives,” said Frank Quevedo, vice president for Southern California Edison, shown in photograph with President Milton A. Gordon.

“This allows transfer students from underrepresented groups to pursue academic work and research projects to make them strongly competitive in future employment.”

In addition to financial support, the students receive academic support, mentorship opportunities and the opportunity for meaningful work experience on- or off-campus.

Developing the scholarship program at Cal State Fullerton made sense, Quevedo said, because of the university’s strong record in attracting diverse student populations and its high-quality programs.

The program builds on the leadership of President Gordon’s support of minority students and students who are from underserved communities, he noted. Southern California Edison has had a long, productive relationship with the university.

The five-year, $750,000 program operates at five California State University campuses: Fullerton, Dominguez Hills, San Bernardino, Channel Islands and Los Angeles.
