Learning Communities
At its simplest, a learning community is a community where people learn from each other. In an academic setting like Freshman Programs, a learning community is a structure in which classes are linked so that groups of students enroll in courses together. Sharing common schedules, students also make friends, form study groups, and discuss and socialize together outside of class. These student cohorts become a small community within a large university. The Freshman Programs learning community structure is a simple recipe to produce support networks for academic, personal, and social success at Cal State Fullerton.
Students participate in Freshman Programs Learning Communities during the first-year of study at Cal State Fullerton. We offer five different thematic learning communities. Students choose the learning community that best matches their interests and goals. In the fall semester, students enroll in our freshman success seminar – University Studies 100 – and a linked General Education course along with required Mathematics and English or Oral Communication classes. In spring semester, students select one linked course matched with their particular learning community. Students also have an opportunity to apply their classroom learning in real-world settings through service learning. Freshman Programs provides advising and other services to make sure that students get the best start at Cal State Fullerton.
