What is a learning community picture What is a Learning Community?

We get this question all the time!  You might expect “it’s a community where people learn from each other.” And you’re right, but there is more to defining a learning community.

In an academic setting like Freshman Programs, a learning community is a structure in which classes are linked so that groups of students enroll in courses together. By sharing common schedules, students also make friends, form study groups, and discuss and socialize together outside of class. These student cohorts become a small community within a large university. The Freshman Programs learning community structure is an instant recipe to produce networks for academic, personal, and social success at Cal State Fullerton.

Students participate in our Learning Communities during the first year of study. In the fall semester, students enroll in our freshman success seminar – University Studies 100 – and in the spring semester students select linked courses matched with their particular learning community where they apply classroom learning in real-world settings through service learning.  All Freshman Programs Learning Communities help students learn the academic and practical skills of successful college students.
