Peer Mentors: Student Guided Freshman Empowerment

Peer Mentors are upper division students who are teamed up with faculty and student services professionals to co-facilitate a section of UNIV 100. Peer Mentors play an active role in class discussions, collaborate with members of their First Year Success Team, and meet with students individually to serve as a role model and mentor.

Peer Mentors empower Freshman Program students and assist them to make relevant connections within the community to accomplish their goals of student success.

My name is Jackeline Alarcon and I am a second year Political Science major with an emphasis in National Intelligence and a minor in Spanish. I am currently commuting from the San Gabriel Valley and hope to be a resident of Fullerton in the spring.  Along with being a Freshman Programs Peer Mentor, I am an ASI Lobby Corps Coordinator, a member of the CSUF IC Scholars Program, and the former president of the Freshman Programs Student Association. I chose to become a Peer Mentor because of my first-year experience with Freshman Programs and my belief in the value of higher education. Freshman Programs ignited my ambition to become involved with the campus community and continues to be the root to all of my successes.

Kabria AllenKabria Allen

Welcome Titans! My name is Kabria Allen and I am going into my 5th and final year here at CSUF. I will be graduating with my degree in both Ethnic Studies and Sociology with a concentration in Education. I plan to further my education and enter the field of Student Affairs with both a Master’s and Ph.D. My ultimate goal is to create and implement nationwide programs that address the specific needs and experiences of underrepresented ethnic groups within higher education. Through research and advocacy, my objective is to increase university retention and graduation rates among students of color. I believe I can make a difference :) This is also the main reason why I joined Freshman Programs and became a Peer Mentor: to make a difference. I began my college career as a Freshman Programs student. My University 100 class helped to create a solid foundation of academic, campus and community success. As a Peer Mentor I will carry on this tradition and be a strong support system for you all and help in your transitions into CSUF, go Titans!
Welcome to the Freshman Programs Titan family!

Jeca DanticJeca Dantic

My name is Monet Jessica Dantic, but everyone calls me Jeca. I am a second year here at Cal State Fullerton as a Communications major with an emphasis on Public Relations. Aside from working hard in class, I try my very best to stay involved on campus as much as possible. Outside of school, I keep myself busy by working out at the gym or just working as a Sales Associate at the mall. Some hobbies of mine include singing, dancing, and cheerleading. I consider my bubbly personality to be a huge part of my friendliness, which is what drew me to become a Peer Mentor. I love helping people, and so this year I hope to provide a great amount of support to help ensure a smooth and fun transition from high school to college!

Kim HaycraftKim Haycraft

My name is Kim Haycraft and my hometown is Costa Mesa, CA. I’m majoring in Philosophy which is in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. I look forward to starting my sophomore year at CSUF. Last year, I served as Vice President for the Freshman Programs Student Association. This year, I will be the Lobby Corps Coordinator for ASI Lobby Corps. I am also involved with Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. I chose to become a Peer Mentor because I attribute my successful transition into higher education to the support I had from Freshman Programs, my professors, and my mentor. I hope I can give support and guidance to the new freshmen so they can transition successfully into our wonderful university. My most memorable experience at CSUF was being able to attend the California Higher Education Student Summit, which was held in Sacramento with students from all the CSU campuses. Once I graduate, I plan to attend law school and pursue a law career.

My name is Jocelyn Holdbrook and this will be my fourth and final year at CSUF as a Human Services major. I am from Napa, CA but have lived in the north bay area most of my life. At CSUF I am currently involved in Panhellenic sorority, the Equestrian Team and was an Orientation Leader in 2009. Sharon IchinoseSharon Ichinose

Hello everyone! My name is Sharon Ichinose and I am a second year Psychology student here at CSUF. I'm from San Gabriel, California but I live in Fullerton for school. I'm so excited to be a Peer Mentor for University 100. On campus I'm an active member of several organizations including Nikkei Student Union (a Japanese culture club), Alpha Phi Omega (a co-ed national service fraternity), and the Student Leadership Institute (SLI). I love to help people and I hope to go into counseling to hopefully work with the LGBTQ community. I'm an admitted geek that's a fan of things like Harry Potter, Disney movies and Broadway musicals. I also love to perform in theatre and write poetry in my spare time. If I weren't going into Psychology I'd probably be going for something in the arts. I hope to be a great resource to you all. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you have them!

Juan JimenezJuan Jimenez

My name is Juan Jimenez and I am from Anaheim, California. I am pursuing a double major in Sociology with an emphasis in Social Work and Communications with an emphasis in Visual Communications. I have been attending CSUF for 2 years, and have been involved with the Social Science Research Center on campus. I chose to become a Peer Mentor because I believe my experiences have given me wisdom that will benefit others. I am a first-generation college student and my first year of college was difficult. As a Peer Mentor, I look forward to helping first year students have a smoother transition than I experienced. During my time at CSUF I have been able to meet a lot of students who have challenged me to apply my education to my personal life. My hope is that students will have a community of people who will also challenge them to grow. In the future, I hope to be able to work with underprivileged youth and help them advance in their education. I am looking to attend graduate school for my Master’s in Social Work in the fall of 2012.

My name is Amy Klein and I am from San Leandro, CA, which is located in Northern California near San Francisco. I am a transfer student to Cal State Fullerton and I am part of the College of Communications with a Communications-Public Relations major. I also have a minor in Psychology. Since being at Cal State Fullerton, I have been involved in the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). This past spring, I was elected to serve on the Executive Board as the Advocacy Director and the SOAR-CICC Representative. I was involved in New Student Programs as an Orientation Leader this past summer. This experience changed my life and allowed me to develop into a much different person. Most recently I became a Peer Mentor for Freshman Programs. I choose to become a Peer Mentor because I enjoyed working with the freshmen over the summer and knew I had to continue my mentorship throughout their first semester. I am looking forward to work with the freshmen class and help them make a smooth transition to CSUF

My future plans include either moving home to San Francisco and working for the San Francisco Giants or doing Public Relations for the Entertainment/Sports industry.

Jasmine KnightenJasmine Knighten

My name is Jasmine Knighten and I am from Rancho Cucamonga, CA.  I am a third year student and I plan on pursuing a Business major.  I have been highly involved in Residence Life.  I participated in RSA my freshman year and I am in my second year of being an RA. I chose to be a Peer Mentor to help freshman with their transition into college and to make their time here worthwhile and enjoyable, whether on or off campus.  Also, to make sure that they don’t just think of CSUF as just a place where they go to school but as a place where they belong and feel at home.  My most memorable times here were living on campus, meeting new friends, some of which were in my University 100 class, and building great bonds with one another. In the future I would like to be a high school Math teacher and maybe get my Master’s in Student Affairs.

Alicia LykinsAlicia Lykins

My name is Alicia Lykins and I am from Anaheim, California.  I am a Communications and American Studies double major.  This is my third year at Cal State Fullerton. I chose to become a Peer Mentor because I had a rough transition into college life at Cal State Fullerton and I want to use my experience to help others have a better transition.  Other than joining the team of Peer Mentors on campus, I am an active member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.  My most memorable experience at CSUF was going through sorority recruitment because I finally felt connected and involved on campus.  My future plans are to join Teach for America in New Orleans, Louisiana. Quinn RoystonQuinn Royston

My name is Quinn G. Royston and I was raised in the not so far away land of Orange, CA.  I’m a 3rd year Business Administration major concentrating in Entrepreneurship.  While on campus I have been involved with Titan Tusk Force (our campus spirit group), been a part of FPSA (Freshman Programs Student Association) as both President and a Student Advisor.  I chose to become a Peer Mentor because I want to help students adjust, realize, and enjoy the opportunity laid before them.  One of my most memorable moments at CSUF was just walking down the path from the Nutwood Parking Structure towards Langsdorf Hall.  A path I traveled daily.  Walking through the mix of concrete and plants represented a tangled world and prepared me for what was ahead, a mix of hardship and growth.  Upon graduating CSUF I plan on starting a business that will bring people together.  A place where people feel they can come together, have a good time, and maybe, if they are lucky, discover something about themselves.
