Freshman Programs is designed to support and guide students in making their first year at Cal State Fullerton an academic and social success. There are six year long learning communities in which students can choose to participate. Although the learning communities share valuable features, each has a unique focus:
- Fullerton First Year emphasizes leadership development
- Compass incorporates opportunities for career and major exploration
- Live ‘N’ Learn focuses on independent living and interpersonal skill development for students living in the CSUF residence halls
- Freshman Future Teachers is designed specifically for students interested in pursuing teaching careers
- ECS Scholars is designed for students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS), and provides supplemental instruction and academic assistance
- Freshman Future Nurses is designed for pre-nursing students, and assists them in completing their comprehensive coursework with intensive study sessions, advising, and career exploration
Features shared by all learning communities include:
- Reserved general education courses that are taught by a caring and friendly instructional team (faculty, staff and peer mentor who have completed training specific to fostering freshmen success in and out of the classroom)
- Enrollment in University 100, a 3-unit general education elective, college success course
- Academic advising (including four-year course planning), tutoring and mentoring
- An introduction to campus resources including places to have fun and relax
- Personal development through various activities like guided academic field trips to sites such as the J. Paul Getty Center and the Museum of Tolerance
- Service-learning experiences which connect classroom theory to community-based projects
- Membership in the Freshman Programs Student Association (FPSA) where students are encouraged to develop leadership skills and begin their involvement on campus
A student lounge, called the Lava Lounge, is also available to Freshman Programs students in McCarthy Hall 142. It’s a great place for students to connect with their peers, utilize computer resources and keep current with campus events.
Students are eligible to participate in a Freshman Programs learning community when they satisfy all requirements to be admitted to the university as a first-time freshman and upon completing a Freshman Programs application (on-line and paper versions available).
